The return of Roger Stone
CNN ^ | 4/19/16 | Dylan Byers

Roger Stone loves resilience. It's why the former body builder had Richard Nixon's face tattooed on his broad back.

"It's there to remind me that in life, when things don't go your way, you get back in the game," Stone said in an interview with CNN. "Nixon said, 'A man is not finished when he's defeated, he's only finished when he quits.'"

When it comes to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential bid, things did not initially go Stone's way. He had one vision for the campaign; Trump had another. But after leaving in August, Stone is back, in a manner of speaking. With the Republicans potentially facing a contested convention, his brand of political trench warfare is now in greater demand than ever.

Late last month, Trump appointed veteran GOP strategist and lobbyist Paul Manafort -- Stone's longtime friend and business partner, dating back to the Reagan years -- to lead his fight for delegates. Sources close to all three men say Stone played a role in that appointment, which gave him a new lifeline into Trump's campaign.

Stone also heads "The Committee to Restore America's Greatness," a pro-Trump super PAC that has redirected its mission "to help stop the Republican establishment from stealing the Presidential nomination" from Trump -- which, of course, will be the campaign's chief preoccupation between now and the Republican convention in late July.

Stone is like Liddy in another way..you might hate his guts but you have to admit he is like a Doberman - loyal, powerful and will gut you if you stand in his candidate’ way. Might have a little Nazi blood in him...

Roger Stone is a bad guy.

Being associated with Trump the way he is, hurts Trump.

Except Dobermans have far too much class to invent conspiracy theories.

That was always one of my favorite Nixon quotes. It was a theme of his whole life.

Stone has been a leader for decades of the GOP faction that hates conservatism and wants it out of the party and its platform.

I guess things like that just don’t matter to folks around here any more.

Slime balls seem to attract other slime balls like Stone.

Did not Nixon quit?

Not really of his own volition. He hung in there until it was absolutely certain he was going to be impeached and removed from office, if he didn't leave first. He keep fighting until the last possible moment, even though it really caused a big deterioration in his health (which almost killed him after leaving office).

Most people in Nixon's humiliated situation would have simply hidden themselves away for the rest of their lives, but Nixon worked hard get back into a position of influence and importance (Monica Crowley wrote two good first-hand accounts of this). He refused to give up until the day he died, just like he kept coming back after the attempt of the Eisenhower people to oust him from the VP slot in '56, the loss to Kennedy in '60, the last press conference in '62, etc.

I think he came to that conclusion as a young person playing football at Whittier.

“Slime balls seem to attract other slime balls like Stone.”

That’s right. The nature of the Cruz campaign requires Trump to fight fire with fire.

Any way you look at it Stone had to come from the bottom of the septic barrel in the Trump NYC headquarters. Stone probably wrote the book on slimeballs and scumbags.

Nixon never did anything to resign over. If I ask people “What was Watergate” they don’t have a clue. If I ask them if Nixoned planned it or knew about it — they say “yes”. You can’t make up the ignorance of people.
