William Rufus DeVane King was not a white settler. He was a senator from Alabama and Franklin Pierce’s Vice President.

The internet is great - but a time waster! But above is an interesting link with a look at William Rufus King. (Neighboring Pierce County was named after the president at the time - makes sense!)

He was inaugurated as VP while he was in Cuba. Barely made it back to the states to Alabama and died there. Never making it to the White House. (Times were sure different back then!)
