Turns out the author, Erika Civitarese, is a little marxist. Check out her FB for a few little hints.

It was once proposed that the government should pay for and provide free food for all in the form of rice and beans. These items provide a fine diet, one that is common in many places where college education is free.

The analog in hire education would be a degree in a classic core curriculum. Majors must have some utility. No victim studies courses. No feminist deconstruction. There would be class attendance requirements and real exams.

Yep. I had a hippy chick cashier at Whole Foods tell me that she thought food should be free.

I said I totally agree, let's start now, chip in the 50¢ you earned ringing me up.

Of course she objected.

So you deserve the 50¢ you earned taking my money, but the farmer who made all the investments, took all the risks, the farm workers who harvested the crops, the truckers who moved them, the factory workers who processed them, the distributors who distributed them, your coworkers who stocked the shelves don't deserve what they earned?

Got it.

How about if all of the profs work for free and relinquish their $200K per year salaries because most of them believe in socialism anyway.

Then we can start talking about free education.

This is a college student, chirping that higher education is a "right."

You have a right to be stupid, dear...but I have no interest in paying for you to get that way.

College should be free for American STEM students with a B average. That would help the country immensely. That and kill H-1B.

UMASS ... figures

She didn’t mention the magical unicorns to pay for it

School should be free - what, so they can spend 4 more years skipping school so they don’t be all ‘actin’ white’?

I suggest all student loans be co-signed
by the college endowment plan assets.

There! Problem solved.

Of COURSE because so many kids take advantage of “Free” K-12 and do such a great job there. Just look at Los Angeles Unified, half of the kids actually graduate and some even know the three R’s! It works for K-12 and only costs $125,000 per kid, let’s all contribute for “Free” college too!!

Should have taken a basic money management course for free on youtube then you most likely wouldn’t have 10s of thousands of dollars in debt. Also...Wake your ass up earlier and you’ll get to class on time.

Here is a simple solution to lower college costs. Go to your professors and demand they take a 75% pay, benefits and retirement cut. Demand their yearly cost of living increases be suspended indefinitely. Demand the same for administrators and demand their numbers of be reduced 75%. Demand the elimination of all humanities and social science classes, especially gender and ethnic studies departments. Where feasible janitorial/facilities/food service work will be done by students. It will reduce costs immensely.

Yes, college should be free

Fine with me. Let's make all education free. We could reduce the amount of taxes we pay now in support of education to zero. While we're at it, let's make everything the taxpayers currently pay for..... free.

One quick tour of the chick's Facebook page and it won't take you long to realize she's a full-fledged card carrying Communist -- or at the very least a "hip millennial Commie".

Never mind that there a state university 20 miles from where she lives where she could commute and greatly reduce her costs, but why should she have to suffer when we alllllll can.

The problem is real.

The proposed solution is absurd.

One option is to go to gain sharing.

The college might get 2% (or lower agreed percentage) of a graduate’s income for twenty years collected by the IRS for each year of college, up to 4% for a two-year degree, 8% for a four year degree, 3% for a master’s degree and 3% for each year of law or medical school, less $300/year (2% of $15,000~=minimum wage job income).

College wouldn’t be free (it simply can’t be), but it can be debt-free for the student.

I agree with this young man, and I feel that the first step he should take is to ask his professors and administrators to work for free.

Once professors and administrators agree to work for free, lowering the cost of university would be child’s play.
