As the Republican candidates for the White House battled in Wisconsin last week, Speaker Paul D. Ryan was conspicuously absent from his home state but he was very much on the political stage.
He visited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, where he also met with local reporters and made several statements affirming the United States commitment there, before heading to other Middle Eastern nations and Germany to discuss security and intelligence issues.

The NYT hates conservatives. The NYT also hates Christians and patriotic Americans. The NYT supports leftists and those who hate America.
The NYT is currently praising speaker Ryan. They love Ryan's quote, "Politics can be a battle of ideas, not insults". They also love "politics must be about uniting people around principles and specific ideasnot impugning motives and playing to anxieties and fear."
Ryan is clearly the favorite of the NYT and is portrayed as an alternative to Trump.
The problem is, what are Ryan's ideas and principles? No one seems to know. But that doesn't stop the media from praising Ryan as a man of ideas.
If chosen by the GOP, he only has one job - to lose to Hillary. His ideas and principles are second to that job.
“The problem is, what are Ryan’s ideas and principles? No one seems to know.”
For starters, see Mitt Romney’s principles. Then check out Karl Rove and the Bush family.
Paul Ryno, this century’s Goldwater of the Electoral College.
1) To change 'Ryan is clearly the favorite of the NYT' to 'Ryan is clearly the favorite of the GOPe'
2) '...and is portrayed as an alternative to Trump' to '...and is portrayed as an alternative to Trump and Cruz.'
Small changes, sure, but seminal. And unless Trump and Cruz settle their differences now, they will both lose the convention. Unless they join together, it will not matter how many delegates Trump has (as long as he's short of the target), nor what stratagem Cruz works at to try and get an advantage in subsequent convention votes (as sharp as Cruz might think he is, the GOPe is sharper and craftier and nastier and has been doing this for decades). Trump and Cruz will either win together or die separately, and it is up to them to decide what they prefer.
As for the GOPe ...losing the General is an acceptable loss, and is a few ways preferable to have either Trump or Cruz win. I could explain that sentence, but in the interests of time chose not to. However, when one understands it then it becomes very clear that the purposes and aims of the GOPe are not the same as yours.
We've all watched the crooks in Congress who know how to SAY the 'right' thing... they DO have professional speech writers and focus group leaders to guide them afterall...
The problem isn't the words - it's what they're actions.. Their meaningless words are only manipulation.. They lie to us about everything. Protecting the borders? Yeah right... while they're taking millions for ‘speeches’ from the CHEAP LABOR EXPRESS...
Guess who wins?
We get the great sounding phrases... the crooks who buy our congressmen's 'speeches' get ACTION. They get laws that are enforced. We get lies.
The New York Times sucks.
Cruz Goes 11 for 12 in Iowa

You are 100% correct. The only way the GOPe is defeated this time
around is if Trump and Cruz join forces. Unfortunately, IMO, that ship
has sailed. These 2 men despise each other. They hate each other.
I see a brokered convention that goes 3 or ballots, effectively freezing
out both trump and cruz and installing either Ryan, Kasich, or Romeny.
One of the 3 will get T-rolled in the general by the ol hildabeast and
the glorious GOPe will live to screw us for another 8 years.
When Cruz lost the South he did not have a strong ground game and delegate stealing strategy. Nor was he apparently familiar with all the tricks and games the GOPe had set up thru the various state primaries. However, the GOPe did have an established delegate system in place as well as the man-power in all the states.
So when Cruz called them for help they took over his already lost campaign. It became nothing more then a Stop Trump vehicle, not a Pro-Cruz Agenda. So all this delegate wrangling is mostly by GOPe people not pro-Cruz people.
Which is why, they are so confident that if Trump loses the first vote the GOPe can put in who they want.
Ideas?
Like trade deals that hurt the American worker. Illegals being treated better than our vets. 'Show' election ... soon to be followed by 'show' trials... The list goes on forever.
Yeah, Pual's their guy - but not one person at the New York Times will vote for him. He's only 'their person' because his 'election'... appointment .. whatever it would be - destroys the Republican Party.
I will never, ever vote for that clown Ryan. It wouldn’t surprise me if this jerk wears one of those toe rings. I am so sick of girly men like Romney & Ryan.
I wish Trump and Cruz had worked together. It appears that it was when Glenn Beck became close to Cruz trouble started. Cruz started attacking Trump. Then Cruz dishonestly sabotaged Ben Carson in Iowa. Then Cruz and Beck started lying about Trump and his supporters.
When Cruz brought Neil Bush and the Bush people into his campaign it got worse. The attack on Trump's wife appears to have made it worse.
Cruz's only chance now is to have the GOP establishment raise money for him and rig the process for him so he gets delegates he can not win through the voters. Cruz is now beholden to the people who hate Trump and want to see him destroyed.
