What leverage does the populace have to force Electoral delegates to vote according to the popular vote?

None. Their only influence is over the Party selecting those electors. Today's Parties ask their electors to sign a pledge to vote for the candidate they represent. As recently as 2000, a Dem delegate did not vote according to their pledge. Needless to say, that person will never be allowed to be a Dem delegate again.

Wow. No People Power, only crony politicians “gracing” to honor us with matching electoral votes if they feel like it.

I wonder this:

What if so many people wrote in a candidate’s name for President, but that person belonged to no party, and that person got the most votes. Do you know what would happen?
