Trump campaign 'taking Indiana very seriously'

INDIANAPOLIS – Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has set up a campaign operation in Indiana ahead of the state's May 3 primary election.

Rex Early, a former Indiana Republican Party chairman, has been named chairman of Trump's campaign in the Hoosier State. The Trump campaign also appointed Suzanne Jaworowski as its Indiana director and Tony Samuel as a vice chairman.

Jaworowski had worked on Carly Fiorina's presidential campaign until Fiorina quit the race in February. Samuel runs a consulting and public relations firm.

Samuel said at a Wednesday news conference in Indianapolis that Trump and his campaign "are taking Indiana very seriously" and that the New York real estate developer plans to visit the state multiple times.

"He'll be here. (We are) going to try to get him in several times," Samuel said.

The campaign will open at least three offices in the state, he said.

Hoosier voters will elect 57 delegates for the Republican National Convention. A candidate needs to win 1,237 delegates to secure the party's presidential nomination. Trump is the front-runner with 743 pledged delegates so far to 517 for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and 143 for Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Trump finished well behind Cruz in Tuesday's primary election in Wisconsin.

"I think they really dislike each other. That's not a show," Early said Wednesday about the rivalry between Trump and Cruz.

Early said he did not think Kasich had enough delegates to compete for the nomination.

"As my grandpa used to say, you ain't got no socks, you can't pull 'em up," Early said.

In a news release, Early said about Trump: “The strength he projects and his bold leadership approach remind me of Ronald Reagan."

Early directed Indiana presidential campaigns for future President Reagan in 1980 and for Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas in 1996, the same year Early sought the GOP nomination for governor.

Wednesday's news conference was at the Indiana Republican Party headquarters.

"We're not endorsing any presidential candidate," GOP spokeswoman Kristen Williams said. "Our space is open to all three GOP presidential candidates and their campaigns, and they have been notified that our space and full resources are available for their use."

I am living in Indy and a ig Trump supporter. I knowmany who are.

I will warn that Indiana has a very RINO machine and Indy radio talk is RINO also.

They think they are conservative, but they are not. Indiana allowed Dan Coates to win here and conservative talk radio acts like Coates is a conservative. LOL

Trump does have a lot of support and he needs to take advantage of that.

Indiana I believe, has 52-57 delegates.

Much more important than Wisconsin.

Donald needs to show up here and he can win it.

It is you who is not conservative, not talk radio. After all you act like the Donald is a conservative, but he is not.

I don’t think they dislike each other. I think they barely know each other.

Hi, used to live in Indianapolis. Voted for old Dan. Big mistake. What is your take on Greg Garrison? Please tell me he has better common sense than to support Cruz. Lol

Trump must dig in with more than just a little. He has to turn up the game and not just speeches.

Trump for President.

Ummm, NO

Ronaldus Maximus was a conservative. He would never endorse a liberal.

I agree. Hopefully Cruz will come and push his so called religious freedom and values song. It will turn off a lot of people. Pence walked back Religious Freedom because of all the pressure he got. Hopefully Cruz will misunderstand our area and turn people off as he has in New York. Issues of gun rights, healthcare and the Wall will go over very well.
