A former Auschwitz guard has died days before his trial in Germany -- dashing the hopes of survivors who wanted to see justice for their dead parents.

Ernst Tremmel, who was 93, was a guard at the notorious Nazi concentration camp during the Second World War.

He was accused of 1,075 counts of accessory to murder, covering the time he worked at the camp from November 1942 to June 1943.

I am angry for the sake of the gospel. This whole pageant is now playing out as though there were none.

The Nazi hunters after WW2 could have used some financial help. Where were the American Jews? The US Government was busy hiding those that could help us vs. the USSR.

How so? He ain't getting any deader.

Exactly. What were the hopes of this family for justice? Execution? Or did they think the trial would result in a death sentence for this guy AND his entire family?

Do you seriously believe there’s any honest way to discern the guilt or innocence of a guy like this at this point, 75 years down the road?

The Allies executed over 74,000 German war criminals after the war,and even with that many still still escaped

That number sounds way too high. Do you have a citation for it? The best estimate of actual post-WWII executions I can find is 486:

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_0002_0020_0_20618.html
"The total number of Nazi criminals convicted in the three Western occupation zones
between 1945 and 1949 was 5,025, of whom 806 were sentenced to death.
Four hundred eighty-six death sentences were carried out; the remainder were
commuted to prison terms of varying lengths."

Anything that happens on earth can at most be a picture of what happens in eternity.

We should go stark raving mad if we wanted cosmic justice on earth. And it looks exactly like this is happening.

That's because you didn't suffer. Read Martin Gilbert's Holocaust so you can understand.

Haven't read that book yet. However, I twice visited DAchau and Flossenburg concentration camps. Dachau is the most sobering place I ever visited. You could feel a sense of dread from the evil that was perpetrated there.

Depends on the integrity of the court and the strength of the case.

Even worse is when people want to take those devils and keep spreading them around.

Somehow you didn’t see Corrie Ten Boom on the list of those calling for this campaign which reaches 75 years later.

We should go stark raving mad if we wanted cosmic justice on earth.

Back in 1945 we, as a society, understood this.

I feel the same way. I don’t mean any offense to those with ancestors who suffered during that time. When I see a 90 something y/o man who can barely see, walk, talk or remember being subjected to a lengthy, complex trial, to me that looks very close to elder abuse.

Which any sane person would believe has become very weak due to the things that time can do to memories.

That doesn’t mean every kid who got drafted and sent to serve at Auschwitz was responsible.

A private sent to guard a prison camp or fight on the front lines, there was no difference between the two.

Back in the late 70's the labor relations manager at my plant was of German descent and he lived in Dearborn. He invited me and another employee who was the son of head of plant security, to a party at a German cultural center in Dearborn on a Saturday night.

During the course of the evening while the beer was flowing, Carl was pointing out older gentlemen in the crowd who fought for the German army and came to the U.S. after the war ended.

I have no problem hunting down the officers who gave the orders but I can't justify the same actions being taken against those who had no choice but to follow those orders......

The best we can hope is to address the worst in a timely manner. After that, it becomes a passionate seeking of what ought to be in God’s realm, in the world’s realm.

If you look at the US oaths of enlisted men and officers you will find them totally different. Enlisted men swear to obey orders of their superior officers. Officers swear to defend the Constitution but there is nothing about obeying superior officers. Why do you suppose this is?

Who was here first? What does that have to do with anything? Finding a theological justification for these events is more than a little tasteless.
