Government Announces Larger February Trade Deficit Despite Trade Deals

Washington ~ The federal government announced that the US trade deficit worsened yet again in February 2016. Modern trade deals continue to cause failures in US trade performance and loss of dynamic, diverse manufacturing and agricultural supply chains. Here are the relevant points from the report, released today.

Trade deficit worsened: “The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, through the Department of Commerce, announced today that the goods and services deficit was $47.1 billion in February, up $1.1 billion from $45.9 billion in January, revised. ” Exports down on a three month average: “Average exports of goods and services decreased $0.9 billion to $178.2 billion in February.” Imports up on a three month average: “Average imports of goods and services increased $0.2 billion to $224.1 billion in February.”

“American trade performance continues to fail because of the focus upon dumb trade agreements end up facilitating more imports than exports,” said Michael Stumo, CEO of the Coalition for a Prosperous America. “The US needs to pivot to an overarching strategy to balance trade rather than pursue losing gambits like the Trans-Pacific Partnership.”

The Coalition for a Prosperous America is a nonprofit organization representing the interests of 2.7 million households through our agricultural, manufacturing and labor members.

Free Traitors™ tell us trade deficits don't matter. Leftist and liberals tell budget deficits don't matter. The two groups are indistinguishable from that stand point.

Trade deficits certainly don’t matter to those who benefit from them.

It seems that every time republicans and/or democrats ridicule Donald Trump over a statement or criticism events prove him right within just a few days.

TDs don’t matter? Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and Milton Friedman all say that they cannot and do not exist. Is there one single “conservative” on this website who can explain how and why they say that?

They're only "dumb" trade agreements if you're not benefitting from them.

Clearly, someone is making a tidy sum w/ these agreements and passing the vig back to the politicos that signed them.

Calling the dumb misses the point by a mile. Call them what they are: they're criminal

Are you aware of their reasoning? Clearly you don’t agree with it, and you don’t have to agree with it, but are you even remotely aware of it?

I’m reminded of liberals who know that “assault rifles are bad, designed only for mass killing on the battlefield” but who do not know what muzzle velocity is, or the difference between a semi-automatic or fully automatic weapon.

In the 60’s we made of of debtors nations and thought they were losers. Look who is a loser now.

A childish and stupid argument.

The QUESTION is a stupid argument? The only stupid thing is calling a question an argument.

Are you aware of their reasoning? Clearly you don’t agree with it, and you don’t have to agree with it, but are you even remotely aware of it?

Their “reasoning” is stupid. It’s about how everyone runs a deficit with their grocer. Preposterous analogy.

1. You’re calling those 3 men stupid, less knowing of economics than you?
2. The grocer argument is NOT, I repeat NOT, the reasoning behind the deficits cannot exist argument.

Has anyone been listening to Trump about this subject? Guess not, he nailed it a long time back. Suddenly this is “news”?

Those people are either stupid, brainwashed or disingenuous because they never analyze things to the end. They do not take into account politic. It is indeed stupid to try and separate domestic and international politics from economics and trade. The two are intertwined. They refuse to see that. That is stupidiy.

Moreover, the laws of supply and demand and the bigger subject of economics are not rocket science. I am an electrical engineering which take years of study to achieve that degree. A lot of high level math. OTH and all the math skills you need for economics analysis is addition and subtraction. Finance is a bit harder to understand but basic economics is well, basic.

1. Okay, you’re a better economist than Milton Friedman, Sowell, and Williams.
2. Those 3 men NEVER act as if politics international or otherwise is not intertwined with economics. 1/billionth of a second reading them will prove that.
3. You know their arguments are flawed, yet you are ABSOLUTELY INCAPABLE of stating their argument.
4. You CLEARLY are absolutely unaware of their thinking.

All them support the lie that Smoot-Hawley somehow caused the Great Depression or made it worse. That is pure BS and a laughable Soviet Union style attempt at rewriting history. That is one example of their disingenuous dogmatic BS.

Those bozos get PAID to write(propagandize) for pro gloBULList free trading corporate publications. So are they going too even consider a protectionist position, ever? No.

I’m stunned at how you speak of 3 titans of economic thought, but clearly they’re not as smart as you.

However, your frantic google search gleaned you nothing.

I am asking you if you are aware of the reasoning behind their saying that trade deficits are a myth. Your link does not address that.

You are NOT REMOTELY AWARE of their thoughts on the subject. Just admit it.

You ridicule them and their ideas, and you couldn’t write a single cogent paragraph on the subject to save your life.

Espousing that trade deficits are a myth is an unsustainable ridiculous supposition. Why would I read about someone telling me gravity is not real? Why bother? It's the same arguments that socialists and liberals use when they say budget deficit are not real.

Go ahead and post a link to that tripe. Or shut up. I read one by Cal Thomas about how everyone runs a deficit with their grocer. IMO utter poppycock. Post more here if you'd like. You can post a link can't you?
