Yes, George Bush senior was lampooned. Here’s the story:

He went to a grocery store, and was fascinated by the bar code scanner, which he had never seen before...and revealed that he was so out of touch, he hadn’t been in a grocery store for at least 10 years.

Oh, here’s the real story:

This was not a store at all, but a trade show where a vendor was demonstrating his bar code scanner. He was trying to show off improved features, such as an ability to read damaged codes and prevent accidental double scans. The guy was proud to show it off to the president, and Bush was a good audience, expressing interest in the product.

The whole story was a sham from the get go.

The media was always careful to show camera angles that did not make it clear this was at a trade show and not in a store.

Then afterwards, a TV debate moderator dutifully asked Bush to state the current price of a gallon of milk. Alas, he was unprepared for that too.
