Putin brings God — and potential jail time for atheists — to Russia

When Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin returned to Earth after becoming the first person to travel into outer space in 1961, the then-officially atheist Kremlin heralded his historic journey as “proof” of the non-existence of God.

Fast-forward to today’s Russia and such pro-atheist sentiments could land you behind bars.

In a court case now underway in southern Russia, 38-year-old blogger Viktor Krasnov faces up to a year in prison after writing, “There is no God” on VKontakte, the Facebook of the former Soviet states. In a heated online exchange that took place in October 2014, Mr. Krasnov also described the Bible as a “collection of Jewish fairy tales.” […]

“This case could set a precedent,” Mr. Krasnov’s lawyer, Andrei Sabinin, told The Washington Times. “It could become accepted that it is forbidden to publicly deny the existence of God.” …

1) A rise communism would threaten Putin’s power
2) Atheism is a core principal of communism
3)So, Putin is suppressing atheism to suppress communism

1) The Russian Church supports Putin
2) Communism was an enemy of the Russian Church
3) Again, Putin is suppressing atheism to suppress communism

Putin is doing the right thing for the wrong reasons, but he is doing the right thing. Communism must not be allowed to raise its ugly head again in Russia. Putin’s moves, in the end, aren’t pro-religion, they are anti-communist.

Western Civilization never really took root in Russia. This is just one example.

One way or the other a totalitarian government is going to put you in jail.

Putin is a very interesting character. He clearly has learned the machiavellian political and control concepts from his KGB trainers and Russian History.

yet he also sees that Russian culture was destroyed by atheistic communism. It made everyone cynical, made everyone a drunk or thief, distorted civil society, nearly destroyed Russian culture, and made it a vacuum and target for the likes of George Soros and aggressive Western progressive ideology (which Putin certainly knows the KGB helped spawn).

It seems like every single government is engaging in a full out assault on Free Speech these days. I can understand it in Russia but the West is catching up.

Many kings tried to get the backing of religion to reinforce their power.
For a former KGB Communist atheist to do it is ironic, but understandable in historical context.

Maybe he just opened his Bible to Psalm 9:17

The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

From the article:

Mr. Putin, a former KGB officer, attends church services and portrays himself as a staunch defender of “Christian values.”

Much more than our “president” does.

True.
My response was my first thought:
Putin in taking a hit, when our ‘guy’
is worse. It was a call for comparison.
I am aware that Vlad has positive attributes which are, ostensibly, meritorious.
