Your real beef is that despite all the stupidity Cruz can't stop him either.
It is not that Trump is truly popular it is all the others are very unpopular and that includes Cruz the Constitutionalist.
It doesn't matter much what his views on the constitution are because all those issue are usually decided by one left wing nut on the Court, like the one today.
No, that's not my "real beef", though nice try at setting up a strawman.
Trump is far from my preferred candidate, but Cruz wasn't either. I think both of them are weak general election candidates. A few weeks ago, I thought the best case scenario remaining was that Trump would stop the gaffes, lower his unfavorabilitye numbers, and give us a shot at winning in November. That's what I hoped would happen.
Instead, he can't stay off Twitter, and has damaged his November prospects. So now, we're left with either nominating a guy who is quickly making himself unelectable in November, or having someone else come out of a convention. And that would split the party and also make it incredibly difficult to win in November.
The bottom line for me at this point is that I want Cruz to stay in and do well because I have absolutely zero faith that Trump won't do more stupid things between now and mid-July. A contested convention is the fallback if Trump makes himself.more unelectable than he already is.
But at this piont, I'd prefer Trump to clean up his act and unite the party because I think that gives us the best chance to win in November. Unfortunately, he's given us very lite sign that he's capable of keeping his foot out of his mouth for that long.
