Fact Checker Trumps Nonsensical Claim He Can Eliminate $19 Trillion In Debt In Eight Years
Donald Trump, in an interview with Bob Woodward and Robert Costa In a revealing interview, Trump predicts a massive recession but intends to eliminate the national debt in 8 years
By Glenn Kessler April 2
The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Robert Costa sat down with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Here's how the interview went. Donald Trump: Weve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt.
Bob Woodward: How long would that take?
Trump: I think I could do it fairly quickly, because of the fact the numbers
Woodward: Whats fairly quickly?
Trump: Well, I would say over a period of eight years. And Ill tell you why.
Woodward: Would you ever be open to tax increases as part of that, to solve the problem?
Trump: I dont think Ill need to. The power is trade. Our deals are so bad.
Woodward: That would be $2 trillion a year.
Trump: No, but Im renegotiating all of our deals, Bob. The big trade deals that were doing so badly on. With China, $505 billion this year in trade. Were losing with everybody.
exchange during a Washington Post interview, March 31, 2016
Of all the wildly impossible assertions made by Donald Trump, the notion that he could eliminate the nations $19 trillion in debt in just eight years ranks near the top. Trump suggests he can manage this feat simply by cutting better trade deals.
If only it were that easy. As we have noted repeatedly, eliminating a trade deficit does not mean the money ends up in government coffers. (Morever, Trump is wrong to say the trade deficit with China is $505 billion; its $366 billion, according to the Census..... (READ ON)

Democrats hvae no problems cutting the VA or raiding social security or ultimately 401ks
From the article:
quote
Thats because the baby-boom generation is retiring, running up the cost of mandatory spending programs, such as Social Security and Medicare. Alone among Republican hopefuls, Trump has pledged not to touch entitlement spending.

Now, social security is NOT an entitlement. It worked for it, paid into it and deserve the benefits.
Section 8 is entitlement. Welfare is entitlement. There are many more examples.
To cut entitlement means pi**ing off the “entitlement crowd”. That would start riots, in my opinion.
what is cruz’s plan to cut national debt? Going to wait for Trump to spell out his policy before you copy it?
Given the fact that Trump wants to keep the ethanol subsidy and government funding for Planned Parenthood, what do you think is the chance he'll get rid all those agencies??
Tariffs. That will do it. The revenue from tariffs will be staggering. Plus, people will be forced to buy domestically, increasing tax revenue. More buying equals more high-quality jobs, and a larger tax base.
It can be done ... but it won’t be done. Too drastic.
It's impossible to do it without cutting a lot of politically popular programs, none of which Trump apparently plans to cut.
Trump: I think I could do it fairly quickly, because of the fact the numbers
Woodward: Whats fairly quickly?
Notice the DC attack media won't even let Trump finish the first sentence of his answer.
Quit changing the argument and open your eyes and ears to what Trump is saying and writing. You can’t cut a debt by 2 trillion a year without some very serious ramifications and the vast majority of people WILL NOT elect him on that strategy. Going after the deficit and slowly paying down the debt will be tough enough but that is the way you go at it.
Just close your eyes, click your heels three times and say, "there's no one like Trump!"
When you’ve received back from social security everything you’ve paid in, plus a reasonable rate of return, every dollar you get after that point is welfare.
I agree, when Obama or any dem makes any kind of claim, it’s considered gospel, doable.
If a Republican says it, then it’s nonsensical or unrealistic.
Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
“...You were saying?”

Apples & Oranges. I was saying that Trump is a buffoon for claiming that he can pay off the over 19 trillion dollar national debt IN 8 YEARS. And he IS a buffoon for so claiming.
I assume you believe him. Will he use fairy dust to accomplish this magical feat? Where are HIS detailed plans to accomplish this?
The latest Chris Matthews style attack. Dickerson also did it to Trump this morning. People are going to get sick of this s*** real fast.
Good for Trump. I’ll take his hyperbole over respectable capitulation to the status quo.
You have to start with a goal, and as far as I know, he’s the only one even talking about the debt.
I agree. It’s not the re-writing of trade deals that will work, it’s the elimination of unnecessary government waste. The federal government is horribly bloated and the excess needs to be eliminated. Empower the states, not the federal government. There is a reason our nation is called the United States of America.
