Deployments to Incirlik AB are 4 year tours. Would you want to be four years away from your wife and kids?
Over the past 50 years, American troops have been stationed at the various bases in Turkey.
However, now they are in danger due to not only ISIS, but a Turkish Islamo-fundamentalist government that up to Erodgan’s election didn’t exist. When I was back in Europe, Turkey was proudly secular and the military disposed of any politician promoting Islam. However, they lost, and Turkey is NOT the same country it was (But then again, neither is Obama’s America).
So American troops are not idiots. The fact that this order has been given shows that times have changed and they are reacting to the changes.
From Oct. 1981-Oct. 1982 I was stationed much further East of Adana/Incirlik, at Pirinclik near Diyarbakir (where the situation right now is very bad). It was a 1-year remote tour, no families or spouses. The site has since closed down. The region was fairly stabilized at the time and we routinely took a bus into Dyiarbakir to sightsee and shop. My how things have changed.
