Japan on Monday will switch on a radar station in the East China Sea, giving it a permanent intelligence gathering post close to Taiwan and a group of disputed islands claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing.
The new Self Defense Force base on Yonaguni is at the western extreme of a string of Japanese islands in the East China Sea, 150 km (93 miles) south of the disputed islands known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.
This radar station is going to irritate China, said Nozomu Yoshitomi, a professor at Nihon University and a former major general in the Self Defense Force.
In addition to being a listening post, the facility could be used a base for military operations in the region, he added.

That radar is close enough to China to pick up aircraft leaving their coastal airfields and can monitor ship movements in the Taiwan Strait.
Hell yes it's going to anger China.

Figure the ChiComs to quickly figure out the radar horizon to fly below. This radar is cannot bet on some 5000' mountain top, so the horizon is not so far off.
Heck, if it is where I think it is, it is just on the east side of Taiwan. Dunno what they will find out that the Taiwanese could not tell them, if so.

That figures, the island didn’t show up. It’s just below the islands to the right of the white borderline. Meh!

On review of the map, no use for Taiwan straights, but why would they care? Taiwan has that nailed down.
The Senkaku are directly to the north, my mistake, so it makes a lot of sense now.
This will definitely piss off the ChiComs. The radar guys on Yonaguni know they have a target painted on them. Kind of like the way I felt when I was working at Pearl Harbor.

China is bulldozing "claimed" islands to put in aircraft runways.
Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan was doing the same thing in their "claimed" Pacific Solomon Islands.
As was the case prior to a World War, the US did nothing.
