In the space of just the allowed portion of the article, the author hits everything that any thinking and observant person has seen for years. The bit about no ammo issued for guard duty even under terror threat goes back to my time in West Germany in the late 70s and the Red Brigade’s random bombings. I’m sure those older than I can cite other instances. The worst, of course, was Beirut, Lebanon, and the Marine barracks. It was the largest strike against the Gipper’s time as President, IMO.
If you wanted the BM gang, all you had to do is go to the K Town army laundry and ask for them.

There in the mid 60s and no ammo then either. Even without ammo, we were a tough lot though. We never lost an engagement with the Viet Cong.
Those bombings occurred in the early seventies, 1972 I believe.
