Five Reasons To Reconsider The Ruger Mini-14

When it comes to .223 Rem. semi-automatic rifles, Ruger’s Mini-14 has long been one of the obvious choices. And it’s no wonder, considering it offers nearly the same handiness as the M1 Carbine, the ballistics of the AR15, and the feel of the classic M1 Garand and M14. The Mini’s popularity confirms its strong perceived relevance among a wide range of users, and sustained sales for more than 40 years is evidence of its sound design—even if it’s unfairly judged by the same criteria as today’s predominant platform, the AR, which enjoys the huge advantages of U.S. military adoption and unlimited manufacturing sources. So while some consider the Mini a bit dowdy or lowly, it is actually a serious standout worth giving a second look. Here are just five of the many reasons why a Mini Ranch, Tactical, Target or Thirty model should be on your short list the next time you shop for a modern rifle:

And I have to rise in defense of the Mini-14. I never tried to target-sight one, but in my (admittedly) anecdotal experience hunting small game with one, I've never found accuracy to be a problem.

Of course, that was back in the days before I had to use a white cane. And before that unfortunate boating accident in which all my precious firearms and reloading gear were lost ...

I have experience with only 2 Mini 14 rifles, one was a cylinder bore while the other was quite accurate, about 1 MOA with commercial .223 ammo. If they used AR/M16 magazines, I might get another.

A “cylinder bore?” I’ve only heard that term used in reference to unchoked shotgun barrels.

I swear, you are my lost at birth twin. I have a SS mini 14 as well, but it’s mine, not the wife’s.

I apparently didn’t marry as well as you did. LOL

My dad has one and I have shot that and an AR side by side many times. I come away each time liking my ARs more.

That is the way the thing spread its shot, fairly uniform but very wide.

It actually used to be mine. Then she shot it. It’s ok, though. I got to build my AR! LOL

Bill’s dead a long time now. S&W also made some bad decisions with clinton. Have both Ruger and S&W and wouldn’t trade ‘em.

True. It was supposed to be on par with an AK47 Amercan style. Fills that role well.

Ruger Tactical model comes with an ATI AR type stock or a folder. You can get them aftermarket too, with rails for light, lasers...

Ruger mags are narrower. They would have to re-engineer the rifle receiver and then they wouldn’t have a market for their mags.

Unless one is in the militia, a silenced, suppressed, scoped, 10/22 will be most useful when the SHTF.

The Mini 14 vs AR thingee is a lot like the Trump vs Cruz thingee. Really.

Shot my Mini, my AR and my AK today. Like them all.

I would vote for any of them above all candidates today.
