It doesn’t matter if it’s false. The only thing that matters is whether the NE KNEW it to be false when they published it. That’s the standard of “actual malice” and people should educate themselves so we know is going on. This is why Trump said the defamation laws should be changed, but as it is, as long as the NE has done diligence and believes the story to be true, they are free and clear and there’s no legal liability for defamation.
