Carpenter's lawyer to Carpenter: "Rant and rave about how trashy such stories are and then refer all questions to me."
She also said it’s completely and utterly false.
At this stage of a story, the only reasonable expectation and reaction is denials all around! What is Enquirer going to do about that? Sue them? Even if one of them steps away from denial, it is a game of numbers and credibility, if all the rest stick to the "denial" script (which might be the truth).

The excerpt posted above is misleading, as it takes her statement out of context. She denied it emphatically. Complete quote:
“What’s out there is tabloid trash. If someone wants to comment on it, they can talk to my lawyer,” she responded.
“It’s categorically fault,” she continued angrily. “You should be ashamed for spreading this smut. Donald Trump supporters should be held to account for it.”
“I’m not spreading smut,” Cohen responded.
“I will not be intimidated,” Carpenter shot back. “I will continue to make my thoughts known about Donald Trump. I’m not backing down.”

That is really damning. No flat out denial. She is lawyering up already.
