If Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz's dig at arch-nemesis Donald Trump sounded good, that's because it was cribbed from an Oscar-winning screenwriter.
The Texas Senator used a line from the 1995 movie "The American President" to warn Trump to stop threatening his wife only Cruz neglected to attribute the source.
"If Donald wants to get into a character fight, he's better off sticking with me, because Heidi is way out of his league," Cruz told CNN Wednesday morning.
That's nearly verbatim from the Aaron Sorkin-penned scene in which Michael Douglas' Commander in Chief slams a rival by saying, "If you want a character debate Bob, you better stick with me because Sydney Ellen Waid is way out of your league."

How does threatening someone not responsible for the ad defend his wife?
Just like I predicted. The usual suspects will repeat this lie over and over until they have a new lie to spread.
Cruz had NOTHING to do with that ad. It would be illegal if he did. Any evidence to the contrary will cause me to switch my first choice from Cruz to Trump.
Until then, don’t take it too personally when I call you a liar.
Could be. OTOH, I’ve never seen “The American President”, but have been telling guys some woman is “way out of your league” since the seventies. It’s not like the movie coined the phrase.
OMG. Is that all you T rumpsters have? Quoting a stupid movie.
Trump stole Reagan’s slogan Make America great again. He’s NEVER given Reagan the credit.
I don’t understand the ignorance of some people.
Trump once again demonstrating he doesn’t understand how PACs work...
I can’t believe how low some Freepers get to smear one of their own. I wish there was this much vitriol for the left
Yeah, Ted’s always the last to know. It’s become a pattern.
(Like another ethically-challenged Harvard lawyer ..... )
Just rt click on box and then select "view", very funny and it says a lot about lyin', stealin', Ted.
That is, I'm sure unintentionally, hilarious.
I've seen similiar words stated here on FR. Who did you steal the line from?
You're living in a fantasy world. If Cruz did not know about it and did not condone it there is no way it would ever get on the air.
What if this Superpac made an ad that characterized Cruz as a lying sob? Would Cruz have any say so in whether that ran?
It was a line from "The American President".
“I wish there was this much vitriol for the left”
Second that in this way: I wish the GOP-e and their boy Ted had as much vitriol for the left as they do for Donald Trump.
What about the bet for $ 2,700 re: 1237 delegates? You’ve got a big mouth, back it up.
Well, he’s either stupid, or deliberate liar. I don’t mind stupid people, but hate liars, so I give him the benefit of the doubt.
My point, which you obviously didn’t get, is that although it may be similiar in verbiage, it doesn’t mean that the phrase was stolen by Cruz. Did you ever think that the phrase utilized in some B rated movie isn’t original?
There, fixed it.
"Theft by deception" is Donny Boy's...
That's just the kind of guy Cruz is.
I can’t remember all the people I’ve stolen lines from over the years. I won’t steal any more lines, though . . . LIKE HELL I WON’T!
