If Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz's dig at arch-nemesis Donald Trump sounded good, that's because it was cribbed from an Oscar-winning screenwriter.
The Texas Senator used a line from the 1995 movie "The American President" to warn Trump to stop threatening his wife only Cruz neglected to attribute the source.
"If Donald wants to get into a character fight, he's better off sticking with me, because Heidi is way out of his league," Cruz told CNN Wednesday morning.
That's nearly verbatim from the Aaron Sorkin-penned scene in which Michael Douglas' Commander in Chief slams a rival by saying, "If you want a character debate Bob, you better stick with me because Sydney Ellen Waid is way out of your league."

Sounded like an “I’m sorry what I did made you mad” level of apology from Trump. Out of curiousosity, are you tracking Trump’s apologies for every unsavory show of support and endorsement he receives, or is that a standard you only hold Cruz to?
Truth be known, this PAC is, by their own words, an anti-Trump PAC and not a pro-Cruz PAC per say. They would have likely put out the ad if Cruz wasn’t even in the race based on that.
Have you demanded apologies from Rubio & Kasich as well? Has Trump? Why not?
It’s not Cruz’s PAC, it’s an Anti-Trump PAC. Cruz has condemned the ad, not that the news bothers to report that, but there’s no reason to assume he has any control over the PAC because the PAC is more anti-Trump than pro-Cruz (and a small fry compared to the Anti-Trump “Our Principles” PAC).
Trump did not “handle” the pro-Trump PAC that shut down; he made it clear where he stood and, as Trump fans, they honored that. The Washington Post was also trying to cause legal trouble over Trump’s PAC. Not the same situation here.
About all a super PAC does is run ads for or against candidates; Trump already has all the publicity he needs, so he doesn’t really need any super PACs. The media is not giving any of his competitors anything like so much free publicity.
“The absence of condemnation or denunciation by Cruz. Cruz tacitly APPROVES of the ad. All he has to do is condemn or denounce the ad. It’s very simple.”
Now he has:

That ad was completely inappropriate and we had nothing to do with it, Cruz told The Daily Beast. It wasnt our campaign. It wasnt even a super PAC affiliated with us in anyway. It was a totally separate group. I dont know the person who did itwe have no involvement with them whatsoever.
Satisfied?
That's all he needed to say. Apparently, by law, he can't coordinate with a Super PAC, so only idiots would assume that his campaign had anything to do with it.
Half a day late, but Ted is learning to do the Right thing.
Why would Ted Cruz have to apologize for an ad that his campaign is not responsible for?
All Cruz had to do was say the ad sucked, like a Quentin Tarantino movie might suck.
It appears as though Cruz FINALLY said just such a thing - late this afternoon.
FINALLY! Gads, Ted - just get it over with.
You could have just said, “yes”. But I’ll take what I can get.
“Apparently, by law, he can’t coordinate with a Super PAC, so only idiots would assume that his campaign had anything to do with it.”
A lot of people here have sworn that Cruz absolutely knew and supported this. So I am glad you recognize their idiocy.
Since Trump made the assumption, are you calling him an idiot? Just asking.
I just wanted to note that he dragged his heels until he got clue-by-foured acrost the noggin. :)
Some people are too smart for their own good.
That's just "politics", as anyone who is not a naif would know.
Cruz and Trump are in The Show [The Big Leagues]. Trump's campaign putting out there that there was "coordination" is just "chin music" - throwing at a dug-in batter's head.
I'll let the results of a Big Leaguer's play speak for itself.
A lot of people here have sworn that Cruz absolutely knew and supported this.
FR is a range of minor league political ball to The Show. Some minor leaguers may opine "coordination", but it's just an opinion. Some may do it tactically.
Even your statement "A lot of people here have sworn" can be parsed for content - "sworn"? "A lot"?
You yourself could be accused of "ladling it on" for effect.
I've been here a REALLY long time. 19 years this month, as a matter of fact. :)
A lot of people here have sworn that Cruz absolutely knew and supported this.
Parsing your statement, we note that "A lot of people here have sworn that Cruz absolutely knew and supported this".
He could DEFINITELY have been accused of supporting this - until he got his mind right this afternoon.
Nice try at sliding that one by. :)
“I’ve been here a REALLY long time. 19 years this month, as a matter of fact.”
Happy FR birthday. I thought I was here a while. You’ve got me beat by a mile.
Oh, Cruz has done none of those things. My bad.
BTW, I have a bridge in a swamp for sale. Are you interested?
Did you watch Lou Dobbs tonight? It would have opened your eyes.
I was a mild Progtard, but was puzzled by the "leaving sh*t out" behavior of my favorite newspapers.
unlearner - I support Cruz, but he's not The Guy. Trump is the only one who knows how to destroy the Media DeathStar.
I hate the Media with undying hate for the impeachment wars, and its precursors. Trump is the only one who can deal death to them.
Maybe Ted Cruz can learn in a few years. :)
I was a Texican in my youth. Lovely country. Always loved Garner State Park, and the Big Bend area.
Awesome. It will be good to see conservatives come together this election.
