Why a Contested Convention Favors Cruz
National Review ^ | March 23, 2016 | Eliana Johnson

Posted on 03/23/2016 9:01:09 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Meet Curly Haugland, former chairman of the North Dakota Republican party and current Republican national committeeman. Haugland is one of just 112 delegates who will arrive unbound to this summer’s Republican convention in Cleveland, free to cast a vote for any candidate he chooses on a first ballot because North Dakota does not hold a primary or caucus. That makes him a particularly valuable asset to the still-dueling presidential campaigns.

Haugland, a Bismarck businessman and a member of the powerful RNC committee that will set the rules governing this year’s convention, says voters may be in for a rude awakening when they learn that the votes cast by delegates on the floor of the convention — rather than those cast in primaries and caucuses — actually determine the Republican nominee. “The results on Fox are just a participation ribbon,” he says. That’s true: Regardless of who wins each state’s nominating contest, a candidate does not become the party’s standard-bearer until he receives a majority of the delegate vote on the convention floor.

The behind-the-scenes efforts by presidential candidates to win the allegiance of delegates such as Haugland are now attracting as much press coverage as the campaign itself. But those privy to the internal workings of the RNC and the delegate-selection process — many of whom agreed to speak on background to preserve their relationships with the candidates — say that the task of wooing individual delegates is probably too complex for an active presidential campaign to successfully manage, and that it’s unlikely to matter much. That’s because the delegates, who are elected through processes dictated by state-party bureaucracies, are themselves likely to be long-time Republican insiders more partial to Cruz than Trump.

Ted’s killing his own campaign with lies and status quo sleezy politics. He wins caucus states where Jeff Roe can run gutter politics. It’s obvious, and the effect it’s having is obvious. Watch what happens as this moves forward.

Don’t forget the newer one, with wifey on the CFR,(and Lyin Ted trashing the same CFR) and the Jeb endorsement. That one is a keeper.

Trump has NEVER requested to go 1-on-1 with Ted. When America starts paying attention right before the convention, they’ll remember that.

Well there’s some truth in your post....Trump himself mentioned he saw no reason for why he shouldn’t be declared the winner sooner rather than later awhile back, and more than once at his rallies.

If they stay home and not vote...well that’s also their choice....it won’t be the first time of doing so in an election... That’s what “quitters” do.

I do think Trump is avoiding debates with Cruz....that was fully obvious when he “called off” the last debate when he would have faced Cruz then. But he also knows he will need a lot of preparation, and that’s one of his weaknesses. He’ll say whatever comes to mind regardless if true or not, in order to sound like he knows what he’s talking about. And his supporters really don’t care about truth....they just want the win.

No it’s Trump trying to destroy Cruz and vice versa.....it goes with the territory of a race to win. Besides a lot of this is coming fro Pacs and not Cruz at all...there is a difference. The photo of Trumps wife in the nude was not Crus...it was a Pac....but contrary to what some might want otherwise, it still was true she did so. No different then attacking Cruz’s wife for working at Sacs....both are attacks on each others wives....politics is dirty business...you and everyone else knows this.

I don’t mention Trumps ‘revolving wall’ because it will swing both ways if it’s ever really built.....I think he’ll simply do what’s already on the books to do and call it his own..if that. It sure won’t be the wall Trump supporters think it should be....that’s a certainty.

I don’t think you guys realize the Lyingest Lyin’ Liar Canadian juvenile crap is rightly beginning to backfire since you began hammering it in January, but by all means keep at it. Savagely and incessantly assassinate Ted’s character while glossing over Trump’s bromance with Putin, voters are noticing that, too. What are you going to be left with? A 15-year liberal reality show ham who prefers a D-10 to statesmanship. Which is what y’all started with. Your lionizing him is built on sand. Wait’ll the footage of him denouncing Romney for being too hard on illegals starts circulating. Your WALL will evaporate as a cloud of dust, as your secret weapon.

Establishment Lyin’ Jeb/Ted lies caught again by Kasich in NY.

Establishment Lyin’ Jeb/Ted being used by Establishment to block Trump so Lyin’ Ryan gets nomination on 2nd ballot.

Wake-Up!!!

The attacks on Trump are backfiring - he’s getting the underdog vote. Think about it - nearly 40 million in attack ads in FL and Trump won by landslide. There is no way Trump can match that. The convention dirty politics played against Trump doesn’t work. Every lie Ted tells hurts him WAY more than it hurts Trump.

Yawn. Nice day dream you are having there. Ted Cruz will never be POTUS. 13% in OH, 17% in FL, etc. Losing Evangelicals to NY Values Trump. He’s a spectacularly bad national candidate but I guess loving eyes can never see.

I started out a few months ago as `Cruz or Lose!’ and most recently, feeling fatuous, changed to, “OK, I’ll vote for him—if he’s all we’ve got.”
After his most recent calumny I’m back to, “No way Jose!”
