I don’t know if he should have immediately returned to the U.S. or not. However, that being said, he should have skipped the ball game, which had no diplomatic significance, and announced he was returning to his hotel (or his command center aboard Air Force One) to monitor the situation, confer with his national security advisers, speak with European leaders, and determine an appropriate response. He could have done all of those things while still in Cuba. Instead, he took the afternoon off to take in a ball game. While at the ballpark, he was completely out of the loop for a few hours, during which time anything could have been happening either in the U.S. or overseas. This guy is completely clueless.
