“The most obvious possibility is that leftist voters know that Hillary is a lock for the Dem nomination, don’t need to vote for her, and are working to pick the Republican candidate they would most like to face in the general, Trump.”

Unfortunately, this could be true.

One possibility is that open primary states are less conservative overall. Conservative states probably don’t allow open primaries as much for obvious reasons. The most conservative states are going with Cruz.

The biggest Closed Primary win went to Trump:

I feel it is very clear that the many more republican voters have voted for Trump, than Cruz. In Florida, a Closed Primary, he beat Ted by more than 600,000 votes. Florida is very representative of the rest of the USA. It has large groups of minority demographics and retirees from the Northeast and Midwest. Florida has military bases, several big cities, and rural areas. Trump beat the nationally favored candidate -Jeb! and Rubio on their home turf.

Over 2.1 million voters chose Trump over Cruz nationally.
That Yuge number is representative of Republicans, not Dems or Indys.

Here’s hoping we have an open election in November.

Yeah, no kidding. It would be nice to have a nominee who could win an open election for the Republicans in November! We have a nominee every four years. Let's actually get somebody in the White House for a change.

This system was designed to elect liberal republicans by the GOPe. It worked for decades keeping conservatives out of the White House. Reagan is the only exception. Trump isn’t a conservative so technically the system is still working. After Goldwater they decided no more conservative candidates. Look what it has given us:

Richard Nixon; Rino
Gerald Ford; Rino
Ronald Reagan
George Bush; Rino
George W. Bush; Rino

If you’re right, it’s news to Mr. and Mrs. Bill, who expect to coast to victory.

Reagan benefited from some open primaries in 1980. MI was an exception.

Wouldn’t that list suggest that Reagan is the Rino?

Ted checked w/ his campaign staff -—— they assured him he made rousing victory speeches AFTER losing Florida, Louisiana, and Nevada....the very same victory speech he made after losing the South. He was good to go.

We all can hope but Cruz won’t be President in 2017 as he won’t be the pick of the GOPe at a
brokered convention and he sure won’t have the delegates. I’m not sure who the favorite may be
at a brokered convention but hell we may see Bush back in play.

No, I said he was an exception.

Look at the losers the republicans put up:
Mitt Romney
John McCain
Bob Dole

It may be true that the Democrats are crossing over to pick who they believe to be the easiest candidate for Hillary to beat. I kind of doubt it though, because that kind if operation would require a media blitz that would be impossible to keep under wraps.

There is some talk of that but not the kind of buzz that would support that notion. The buzz I’m hearing seems to suggest they are crossing over because they actually support Trump.

Either way, they are making a YUGE mistake if they think Trump is the easier Republican candidate for Hillary Clinton to beat.

To be fair, Florida does allow you to change parties at a time specific before the primary, then change back at a time specific for the general. So, it’s not really closed, but does take effort to change with a deadline. But your point is well made (and taken). Go Trump!

We shall wait and see but I think this is hogwash. The knee pad media wouldn’t be all in to taking down Trump otherwise.

Notwithstanding my previous post (#57)I agree Florida is a very diverse state and probably fairly representative of the country...and Trump schlonged Cruz there.

My point was that the Republican party isn’t a conservative party. The only conservative was Reagan, he’s the odd one out. Therefore, it’s more likely the Republican party really is like those 3. So Reagan is a Republican in name only. :P
