Update: Raids by the FBI are now being reported also in Brooklyn, possibly related to the raids in Monsey.
Several locations were raided in Monsey including the office of a local alarm company suspected in helping in the misuse of federal education funds, the Talpios Yeshiva on College Road, the Belz Yeshiva on Main Street, Shaar Efraim, Ateres Tzvi, and many local offices in locations on Route 59, Robert Pitt Drive, and more.
Federal agents have been seen roaming the streets of Monsey and visiting several locations around town today, Wednesday.
The raids are part of an investigation into whether local Yeshivas misused the federal government’s E-Rate program intended for the purchase of educational telecommunications technology.

The FBI investigators issued search warrants today before seizing boxes of evidence that could help them find out if the targeted schools used the federal technology funds for their intended purpose or pocketed millions of dollars earmarked for technology education.

According authorities, more than 300 agents and officers were involved in today’s operation in Monsey.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said: “Today, the FBI, working with our office, conducted searches in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation. If and when charges are filed, they will eventually become public. This remains an ongoing matter, and we are unable to provide any additional information at this time.”
Wednesday’s raids come as state and federal prosecutors continue jointly investigating potential governmental corruption in Ramapo and Clarkstown. A report last week by Nws12 forcasted a “far-reaching corruption probe” this week in Rockland County, reportedly zeroing in on officials in Ramapo, Clarkstown and at the county government level.
So far, no arrests were made during the raids, law enforcement sources said.

But the case of the New Square Four was different.
Mrs. Clinton had swung through the Hasidic village of New Square, in Rockland County north of New York City, during her Senate campaign. And that campaign stop paid off on Nov. 7 with 1,400 votes for Clinton—about 100 times the dozen votes that her opponent, Republican Rick A. Lazio, received and far more than she received in other nearby Orthodox Jewish communities.
By any measure, the New Square case appears unusual. In May 1997, federal prosecutors announced indictments of six men on charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and mail fraud in connection with the theft of tens of millions of dollars in federal and state aid in a scheme to benefit residents of New Square. Much of the aid was meant to go to legitimate education programs, prosecutors charged, but instead was funneled through a fictitious school.
Two of the indicted suspects fled the country. The four others—Kalmen Stern, Jacob Elbaum, Benjamin Berger and David Goldstein—were convicted in 1999. In October 1999, they were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 30 to 78 months.
On Jan. 20, his last day in office, Clinton used his absolute clemency power to cut Berger’s sentence to two years and the others’ to 30 months. All four are still in prison.
