Then why do people vote in primaries for candidates?

Good question. Since the 'elites' own the party, why should they
leave the selection of whom they choose to carry the party banner
in the hands of the general public? Does Apple put product
development decisions up for a vote by its customers?
Perhaps primaries are to infuse the electorate with the notion
that they have somehow chosen the nominee and are thus
obligated to vote for the nominee for the actual office.
In which case, the primaries serve to placate the electorate
so they do not feel they have failed to do anything.
