This is all determined State-by-State.
In Georgia, we do not register to vote by any party.
We have what is called a “modified-open primary”

When you show up at tour polling place during a primary,
they ask you if you want a democrat or republican ballot.
You can vote for anyone you want to in any party.

The only restriction is in the case of a run-off.
If there is a run-off,
and you voted in the republican primary,
you can not vote in the democrat run-off,
and vice-versa.
You can’t be involved with picking the quarterback for both teams.

In Illinois, they gave up on the idea of party registration years ago. You just name your ballot.

You have to be registered, but you could choose between ballots: Dem, Rep, Green, Issues Only.
