I visited Pompeii in July, 1966. To get to the highway leading there, we drove from the campground where we were staying just outside of Naples through the streets of that city, where we saw the scunizzi, the young street hoodlums, in action.
We were following a flatbed truck loaded with crates of tomatoes. When it stopped at a red light, some kids darted out, grabbed one of the crates, and then ran off.
At Pompeii, we were besieged by vendors selling trinkets, notably cameos, for which the place was famous. One of them, desperate for a sale, actually grabbed onto the door as our car began to move and continued to make her sales pitch through the window.
Despite these experiences, Pompeii was well worth the visit. Interestingly, in 1966, I saw no evidence of Islam anywhere we traveled in Europe.
