U.S. says North Korean submarine missing
CNN ^ | 03/11/2016 | By Barbara Starr

The North Korean regime lost contact with one of its submarines earlier this week, three U.S. officials familiar with the latest information told CNN.

U.S. spy satellites, aircraft and ships have been secretly watching for days as the North Korean navy searched for the missing sub.

The U.S. is unsure if the missing vessel is adrift under the sea or whether it has sunk, the officials said, but believes it suffered some type of failure during an exercise.

Yeah, I know they're godless Norks and all but

I thought of this song when the Kursk went down.

For the Norks...not so much.

I’m pretty sure they know where it is. It sank.

http://news.usni.org/2016/03/11/u-s-official-north-korean-submarine-is-missing-presumed-sunk

From this article:
About week ago it went missing and the speculation is that it sank,” the official told USNI News.
“The North Koreans have not made an attempt to indicate there is something wrong or that they require help or some type of assistance.”

The official was reluctant to give specific details on the presumed loss of the boat due to sensitivities on how the military was tracking the vessel.

Possible. Other possibilities are (1) it suffered a catastrophic malfunction, (2) the South Koreans sunk it, and (3) other.

I’d put my money on (1).

A friend of mine's brother was a sonar tech on a boomer some years ago. He's since passed on, but he implied they could hear a whale fart a thousand miles away.

We know what happened and where the boat is.

I’m sure every move they make is being watched. If there is any hope of rescue it has to be now and I’m sure NK won’t ask for help and the US isn’t going to come right out and say we were spying. I guess that’s why this article is being written now. Trying to pressure them into asking for help.

If it’s typical of Nork technology, it was probably sailing inverted and the commander gave the order to surface. So it went straight to the bottom and someone opened the hatch to look outside.

I got a sinking feeling when the Scorpion went down but not so much now.

My ship, the USS Harlan R Dickson (DD 708) was on the same Mediterranean deployment in early 1968 as the Scorpion. We had run Anti-Submarine Warfare exercises with the Scorpion before she departed the Med to head back home.

Quite a shock, hit us all pretty hard.

Bingo, I think we have a winner over here. The rats, er... crew are taking notice of the briny water flooding the hold and starting to panic, as they well should.
