If Patton had a finer edge, we would have landed at Calais, as he wanted. Patton didn’t lead the invasion at Normandy because they used him as a distraction to the German Army. There is speculation that Patton’s invasion plan at Calais would have been the decisive blow and ended the war in Europe significantly faster, instead of playing politics and landing in Normandy. It would have been ugly, but Patton was a tactical genius.

I know how history played out. But you don't use your best fighting general as a distraction. Patton may not have been able to pick the landing area.... but the strategy would have been his and I don't think we would have gone into Omaha.
Anyhow, I do believe Patton was pulled politically. They had to eventually bring him in... and still they hamstrung his operation all the way.
