Heartfelt RIP
Classical crisp production
He really nailed it
On Sergeant Peppers it’s just so defined and plays loud on tube amps great
Really really authentic producer
For those big egos to ride with him as long as they did
If Epstein chose Martin he earned his pay that day
Nothing like playing great music that was recorded on tube amps on one's own tube amps. ....through vintage horn speakers (JBL, Altec, Klipsch, or Tannoy DCs).
If you haven't heard the Beatles' mono mixes, I can't recommend them highly enough. It's the way the Beatles and Martin intended the music be heard. Mono was the dominant format in the UK throughout most of the '60s. Consequently, all their records through Sgt. Pepper were originally mixed in mono -- the stereo mix was an afterthought, done quickly. And it sounded like it. Artificial.
I like Lennon's "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and Harrison's "Savoy Truffle" on the White Album.
Epstein didn't choose Martin. Epstein and the Beatles had been turned down by every major record label. In desperation Epstein went to EMI, who weren't really interested but gave them to staff producer George Martin at their comedy division, Parlophone, to see if he could do anything with them.
