Because Trump is the strongest non-Establishment candidate. Therefore, he is the guy they most urgently need to halt, break his momentum.

Because he wants to redistribute votes from Donald Trump to anybody but Trump. He's not really supporting Kasich (whom McConnell is complaining about because he won't drop out) or Cruz (whom the Establishment crowd don't like either).
They just have to ablate, blunt, and eventually destroy the lead man's momentum until he can be screwed over royally in the convention. Then the Establishment candidate can be imposed under "the Rules". (To a conservative walkout, probably.)
