Actually, both libertarian and social conservatives trace back to Goldwater, and most especially to a position speech he gave in May, 1964, in which it becomes clear that both strains of conservatism were united in him.

This tends to get lost in the libertarian/social conservative split that one sees nowadays. But that in turn owes almost totally to the defeasance of the e-GOP and libertarians, who don't want to shoulder the load of keeping society from going to hell.

Interesting. I hadn’t heard that perspective before. I figured just libertarian since, as Bill Buckley said of Goldwater:

Conspicuous here was his defense of Supreme Court decisions involving abortion, gay rights, and the separation of church and state. Most followers of the senator were surprised, and abashed, especially at his defense of abortion
