But let's not restrict it to cash handouts. Public education is a welfare program. It's socialized education. Yet most parents thoughtlessly accept it, and the end result is a young adult with a brain consisting of government cheese.
Did you know that issue was debated at the founding of our country? Jefferson believed the populace would need education (back then people were taught to think) in order to keep the new Republic free. Others foresaw the tyrany that could emerge from public education. For the first 150 years, the States and the local cities ruled over education, the content thereof. If you haven’t read it, a book called “Market Education” is a readable history of American education. Did you know which two books were found, one or the other, in homes from the Westward pioneers to the Eastern seaboard in the 1800’s? The Bible or the works of Shakespeare! The Temple version published back then is not an easy read. The moral fiber of the country is set by what children and adults read. Whether “educated” or not, people could read above the level of Americans of today—and think about what it meant. Didn’t mean to lecture. I agree with your sentiment but am fascinated by our history.
