Usually in a case where there is nothing, or very little, a suspect will ask for immunity because they are on the hook for something minor and they are promising a bigger fish. Often, they don’t cough anything up, which is why it is risky to give in to a request for amnesty.

However, when the prosecutor is convinced that the person can give up someone bigger, they can remove the 5th amendment shield and force immunity on a witness. The witness then faces the chance of perjury and losing immunity if convicted.

If Pagliano has had immunity forced on him, then the investigators know without a doubt that they have a strong case against Clinton.
