Senate Republicans Debate Distancing Themselves from Trump

In an election year dominated by bombastic rhetoric and a Republican frontrunner who makes daily headlines for controversial statements, Senate Republicans are privately debating whether some in their ranks may need to distance themselves from Donald Trump if he were to win their party's nomination for president.

"You will find candidates who will have to separate themselves from the party's nominee if somebody like him is the nominee," Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) told reporters of the prospects of Donald Trump winning the Republican nomination for President.

But with Donald Trump making headlines with language and policy proposals that are being openly criticized by Congressional leadership, some Republicans are worried having Trump on the ballot could hurt their chances to hold onto the majority. Republicans currently hold the majority with 54 seats.

"It's a concern to have Trump at the top of the ticket, no doubt, for anybody on the ballot," Sen Jeff Flake, a Republican from Arizona, told reporters.

The prospect of a Trump candidacy has many Senate Republicans up for reelection balancing a tight-rope of rhetoric when asked if they will support the real-estate developer if he were to become the nominee.

"I've always said I was going to support the nominee, I'm hopeful I'll be able to support the nominee," Senator Richard Burr, a Republican from North Carolina, told reporters when asked if he would support a Candidate Trump

A spokeswoman for Senator Kelly Ayotte, a Republican up for reelection in New Hampshire, released a statement saying the Senator "intends to support the Republican nominee, however she would like to see how the process plays out." "

These idiots are in the process of painting themselves into a corner.
On the plus side we get to know who in Washington has open contempt for the voters.

They all need to lose - and take Mitch McConman with them while they’re at it.

Ain’t nothing “conservative” about the Senate GOP.

Way I see it, if Trump is our nominee and they refuse to support/back him, we can vote those fools out. Establishment lifers in Congress needs to end anyway.

Have youever seen a party eat it’s own this way? What a bunch of cannibals. Good - distance yourself = we’re taking names. Primaries are great for getting rid of these creeps!

as Trump gets more delegates, he’ll get more endorsements, and these guys are going to look like the little “out of touch” sore losers.

If Senate Republicans RINOs really want to distance themselves from Trump then they can resign.

Have incumbent lawmakers given any good reasons for not wanting to deal with Trump? Or do they just whine that Trump is yucky?

Senate Republicans, you do realize we are writing down each and every one of your names. Honestly....we don’t need any of you because we are going to build a bigger better Conservative Party without any of you. Bye bye....

I was wondering how a Republican Senate majority could make itself more irrelevant than it has during the past year.

They also need to remember what happened to their old buddy Eric Cantor. He thought he was too big to get cut loose....didn’t work out so well for him once his district actual took notice of his shenanigans.

So we the people vote, we chose Trump; but it doesn't matter to the Republican establishment . Basically we mean nothing. We have no voice.

I lived through the Goldwater election and I feel there is a similar tone here. The difference today the establishment is out of touch with the people. Most of the votes are for antiestablishment people. This party is on a suicide mission for now. The good part we have been fighting them since 2010. And we do have many victories. But we haven’t won a war yet.

Kelly Ayotte was never the conservative tea party darling she was elected as being. She can cry her way out of office with her annoying lilting voice that always sounds like she is about to cry.
