When Pat Buchanan won the 1996 NH primary, Bill Kristol said that he would support Bill Clinton in the general election if Buchanan became the Republican nominee. Neoconservatives and the GOP establishment have always had more in common with establishment Democrats than with the libertarian or populist grassroots Right, but rarely are they so open about it. Usually they like to at least maintain the act of being different from Democrats.

The neoconservatives made the same declaration in 1992 — they would bolt the party if Buchanan won. Party loyalty only applies when their guy wins — and then they demand it of everyone else.
