Members of Congress did something almost unheard of at Tuesdays hearing on the brewing battle over encryption between Apple and the FBI: their job. Both Democrats and Republicans grilled FBI director Jim Comey about his agencys unprecedented demand that Apple weaken the iPhones security protections to facilitate surveillance. This would have dire implications for smartphone users around the globe.

Make no mistake.
If Trump and Cruz weren’t winning the primaries, Congress would not be doing their jobs.
Trust me - they are letting the donor class and the elites know that once the GE is completed and either their man Hillary or their man Rubio/Bush win the White House, it will again be business as usual.
Loss of power through the vote is the only thing they understand.
Just tell them that their is 501(c)(3) paperwork to start a local Tea Party on that phone and Apple will open it up faster than crap through a goose...
Comey must be able to do his job or we’ll never be able to prosecute and convict corrupt left wing radicals like the Clintons and the Obamas. If Republicans work with the Democrats against Comey, it’ll never happen.
Any investigative powers which are allowed because We’ll Only Use This Against Terrorists, We Promise!! will, sooner than later, be used against political opponents.
But, but, but I thought if you side with Apple, then you’re siding with the terrorists?
The second duty is to defend us from foreign attack.
In that order.
The politicians only care about lining their pockets. If the do something good for society it’s only because they were forced to not because they wanted to. The Clinton Crime Family is the best example of the ultimate politicians. They have no concerns about the country or selling government secrets as long as they get millions for it.
Seems to have never been heard of by our current government.
Snowden’s Millenial Fanboys are now a potent political force.
Comey looked like Lois Lerner before congress. He didn’t know anything, no I didn’t, no I don’t know what that is, no no no. I don’t know.
The FBI does not want that one phone opened; that would be done for them by Apple. The FBI wants the key to open any iphones they want to. This is directed by Obama/dems IMO.
And here I’ve been slammed over and over for siding with Apple here on FR. Maybe the tide is turning towards reason?
So you think Apple would design a new system that would compromise every one of their new phones?
No, the FBI is obviously following the Fourth Amendment.
Apple is selling a device that makes a valid Fourth Amendment warrant useless.
Also it affects other constitutional rights such as the right to compel testimony in one’s defense useless.
Not a good thing!
But encryption isn’t going away, so some solution must be found.
One that keeps our rights I hope.
So does the company that makes Bic lighters.
Ha! Not bad!
It could be proven that one destroyed evidence with a lighter- which is a crime, and may be held against you by a jury (not sure about that).
It’s the convenience and ease of encryption that makes the difference.
The Fourth could always be evaded by extraordinary means, this makes the means un-extraordinary indeed. Any idiot can do it easily.
Jaw hits floor at this point
Apple is selling a device that makes a valid Fourth Amendment warrant useless
Not really - ever heard of PGP - same argument.
I don’t consider it a first-second type of thing.
Defending us from enemies (foreign AND domestic) is a significant portion of defending our freedoms, IMO.
Well, if you don’t think getting a warrant is obviously following the Fourth Amendment, we’ll just have to differ.
