That might have been Trump’s thoughts at the time. I see that you don’t allow for people to learn and grow. If we don’t - we stagnate. But I've never seen Trump explain why he supports a policy now that he declared "mean-spirited" in the last election, and it seems many Trump supporters disqualify others for having changed their positions on some issues.
And just so you don't waste you time, I don't think the argument that he was only a private citizens then matters. If anything, the lack of political pressure/motive means he had no reason. Not to be completely about what he thought back then.
