The Jacksonian Temptation: Trump vs. Cruz
Breitbart ^ | February 24, 2016 | Jarrett Stepman

Posted on 02/25/2016 7:27:50 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

"......While Trump has captured much of the cultural zeitgeist of 21st century Jacksonianism, Cruz adheres to true Jacksonian principles. Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund Chairman Jenny Beth Martin said in her endorsement of Cruz, "We seek a candidate who shares our values: personal freedom, economic freedom, and a debt-free future." Among those looking for a candidate who "shares my values," Cruz received 34% in South Carolina to Trump's 8%, according to exit polls.

Trump is the best at communicating culturally to a frustrated Jacksonian Appalachia, but many of his solutions are far from Jacksonian. In sharp contrast to the historical Jacksonians, who promised only the freedom to rise rather than a piece of the corrupt action, a fundamental part of Trump's message has been that he's looking to get the system to take more account of "his people." This is why he is spoken unashamedly of his record buying politicians, wheeling and dealing, eminent domain usage, and other crony capitalist moves that would have horrified the Jacksonians. He is looking to join the game, and the promise is that he will get a piece of it for his supporters.

Cruz has crafted a very strong Jacksonian message based on limited government, the power of free enterprise, and the need to return to constitutional restraints. He's even hit other, more limited issues that nonetheless appeal to Jacksonians-such as turning over federal land to the states and the American people. He fights crony deals and the establishment class, which is what most Jacksonians really want. But he has as yet failed to connect on a deeper level to Jacksonian voters because of his style...

The closest modern comparison to the Jacksonian outsider hero sweeping the nation is Ronald Reagan, who combined Trump's communication skills and cultural resonance with Cruz's Jacksonian political philosophy...........

Find it odd that people who talk the most about Reagan want to ignore his words and cling to their emotion bases opinions.

What would you say about a Candidate who raised taxes 6 times? Signed an illegal alien amnesty? ran away from a Muslim terrorist threat and doubled the size of the Federal Debt in 8 years?

That candidate was Ronald Reagan.

This is the problem you dogmatic purists have. Your perfect flawless candidate does not exist. The problem for your Conservative Pharisees is you all worship a myth Reagan created in the 1990s by the Conservative Media Establishment.

The Reagan myth runs something like this. Reagan, after beating both Carter and the GOP Political Establishment rode into DC, took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves , and proceeded to beat the snot out of everyone in DC.

The real Reagan was a much more human, flawed, man. Reagan went to DC and proceed to cut deals with a Democrat Congress to move his political ball down the field. He surrendered on any number of political issues that resulted in the Conservative Media Establishment writing in 1986 about how Reagan had “betrayed the Conservative Movement”

So even if by some miracle you elect you "Principled Conservative" Cruz he is going to ride to DC....and cut a whole lot of deals with the Congress to get things done that are going to leave you all with a massive case of political purity butt hurt.

Cruz adheres to true Jacksonian principles how? He is a lifetime govt employee. Jackson had executive experience as a hero general who owned a large business.

Cruz is a lawyer who worked for the govt his whole life.

Reagan had to deal with Dem majorites in both houses of congress. So, he had to compromise. There was no way around it.

-----

The Gov Reagan also legalized abortion in Cali before the Supreme Court made it legal nation wide and passed gun laws that would make the NRA's head spin these days.

In this election you either 'get it' or you don't. This is utter BS. You either understand Trump or you don't. You either see through CRuz's hypocritical crap or you don't.

Reagan also had a Republican Senate and Congress to work with for the first 2 years also.

Reagan had a coalition and that coalition is dead. It died in SC when evangelicals turned away from Cruz (an evangelical). The chain is broken. It’s over.

But Trump is the billionaire you can trust.

"It's hard for me to turn down money because that's what I've done in my whole life. I grab and grab and grab. You know I get greedy. I want money, money." --Trump

Yay!

I don’t think that Cruz supporters or Trump supporters could go for Rubio. Rubio seems like the opposite of what either of those two camps are advocating.

Congress is not an ideological farm where only true believers live. It is a collection of interests that a President has to negotiate with no matter which party holds the Majority.

Lol, the coalition is dead because it didn’t vote for Cruz? Yeah, okay.

Oh, we get it: Cruz’ people dream of the Shining City on the Hill while DT’s people want a comped bar tab at Caesar’s Palace.

Reagan is remembered fondly for how he made Americans feel about being Americans. Trump has the same potential.

Cruz does not.

No the Dems never lost the House under Reagan. Reagan had a GOP Senate/Dem House the 1st 2 years. It wasn’t until 1994 the Dems finally lost the house

Now I feel great that Trump supports Planned Parenthood, touchback amnesty, Canadian government-run healthcare, brags about sleeping with married women and brags, “ It’s hard for me to turn down money because that’s what I’ve done in my whole life. I grab and grab and grab. You know I get greedy. I want money, money.”

TRUMP IS AMAZING!!!

I was going off this chart https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Presidents_and_control_of_Congress

It said congress was divided for 6 out of the 8 years of Reagan - I took that to mean GOP control for 2 years.

What’s left of the coalition need to demand Cruz as VP - to reverse this leftward drift until he can run again - or we stay home Nov. 8.

The nation needs more than “the feeling” we need the “beef” - Cruz knows what needs to be done.
