As FR today illustrates, I don’t think it is possible for Republicans to put together a large enough coalition to win the Presidency any more.
A populist like Trump brings in new voters and peels off some Democrats, but will be opposed by a decent percentage of the party’s base.
A true conservative like Cruz excites the base and also brings in some new voters, but pushes the party’s RINOs over to the Dems.
A “moderate” like Rubio unites much of the existing party, but doesn’t excite anybody and brings in zero new voters.
In short, we seem to hate each other as much or more than we hate the Liberals, and that will doom us in Presidential elections for the foreseeable future.
