Super Tuesday is when the nomination contest leaves the quirky confines of individual states and finally assumes the feel of a national campaign.
On March 1, there will be 12 states, concentrated in the South but also scattered around the country, allotting just under 600 delegates, around 25 percent of the overall total. Competing on Super Tuesday takes a lot of money, which gives Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz an edge, and will sorely test the theory behind Sen. Marco Rubio âs candidacy.
Rubio raised just over $4 million in January, according to FEC reports. He spent over $10 million in that crucial month and had just $5 million cash on hand at the beginning of February. After expensive contests in New Hampshire and South Carolina, Rubio is likely to have very depleted campaign accounts. His campaign reportedly spent almost $5 million for its second place finish in the South Carolina primary contest.
Rubioâs campaign has been a relatively high-spending enterprise. In the last quarter of 2015, his campaign spent more than it brought in. More worrying for Rubio, most of his donations are high-dollar, maxed-out contributions. Just around 20 percent of his donations in January were $200 or less. This means Rubio has to attract new donors, rather than being able to mine the donors he already has.
Ted Cruz has almost the exact opposite of a campaign fundraising approach. Cruz had just under $14 million cash on hand at the end of January. His campaign raised $7.5 million in January and spent $12 million. Almost half of the amount he collected, though, were in donations of $200 or less. This puts his campaign in a strong position to keep raising more funds from existing donors.
His campaign was also far more frugal than Rubioâs in February.

Both Cruz and Boobio need to suspend their campaigns.
The Establishment is saying Cruz needs to step aside for Rubio
These people are nuts
Trump won South Carolina with 5 paid employees and a two million dollar budget.
What did Ted and Rubio spend for second and third place?
“Both Cruz and Boobio need to suspend their campaigns.”
Why?
How about this idea: the narcissitic jackass blowhard suspends his.
I agree with you. Both of them spent a lot more in SC than Trump did. I do not know the exact figures.
Rubio yes, Cruz, not gonna happen
From what it sounds like, Cruz is trying to campaign on the cheap in NV, holding rallies from the back of a pick-up truck. Maybe he’s conserving money for the Super Tuesday states. The Cruz schedule looks like he’s concentrating on TX, AR, and VA. If he’s worried about TX, he must think that his whole campaign is in trouble. It is also interesting to think that he may be writing off 11 contests.
All I know for sure is that if Cruz and Rubio don’t each win, and win big at least two or three states each, both of them will be out of the race by or even before March 15th. Because, if they don’t win big in some of these contests, people will stop contributing to the guys who perpetually are 2nd and 3rd place finishers. People will gravitate to someone who wins, and that will be Trump.
“Both Cruz and Boobio need to suspend their campaigns.”
Well, Cruz still has millions in the bank and is competitive in several Super Tuesday states. As a supporter and donor, I would be furious if he dropped out any time before March 1. After that, it may be time to re-evaluate, but I think Cruz has one more shot — to win a vast majority of delegates on Super Tuesday. Granted, it’s a long shot, but still possible.
As for Rubio, as the article points out, his burn rate is really high and he is unlikely to have the funds to compete on Super Tuesday. Beyond that, if he loses his home state of Florida, it’s lights out.
Trump has a money edge, really?
Ive said it here before, if Trump wins, he will get my vote. Not terribly liking the idea but I will not stay home and let Hillary win.
Gave the H-1B twins each $10 to go away.
Maybe “give me money to drop out” should be their new tactic. I bet people would look for spare change under car seats!
Rubio told Jorge Ramos on Spanish language media that “Amnesty” was his “first priority”. This guy is going nowhere and thank Gawd he is out of the Senate. I run into a few that admit to supporting him and every one of them do not admit to knowing he is for Amnesty and was a co sponsor of amnesty in the Chuck Schumer/McCain, Graham Amnesty bill in the Senate.
other that that failed effort he has not one legislative achievement and hold the Senate record for absenteeism. At least Obama was there— he just abstained!!
As a Floridian, I know all to well what Rubio is all about. Personally, I cant stand the guy and hope that both Trump and Cruz pound his campaign into the dirt.
Thank goodness Jeb burned up so much of their cash already. I think we should all thank him for that.
LOL. Hey, I like the narcissistic jackass! Better than sucking the thumb in the fetal position like the other GOPE candidates.
Just like Jeb claimed in 2014 he could win the GOP without the base.
Who are these idiots?
Rubio record is the Establishments.
Every person in the GOP will endorse him but just piss of the base.
For about a year, we had a gazillion polls on Iowa and candidates spent months there, visiting every corn field, state fair and square dance, in order that they could compete for a handful of delegates.
Now we are a week away from 15 state contests totaling over 600 available delegates. I haven't seen more than a handful of recent polls, candidates aren't going to have time to visit them all, and it will be all over before the milk currently in my refrigerator expires.
Yes, a week from tomorrow, the nomination will be pretty much decided. This after an entire year of Iowa, Iowa, Iowa. I'm so sick of Iowa.
In 2020, can we please move Iowa to the end of the process? They can have their silly caucuses the end of June. How does that sound?
GAME OVER MAN!
