Jeb Bush's presidential campaign was a success - for its consultants (Mike Murphy paid millions)
Washington Post ^ | 2/22/16 | Adam Sheingate

With apologies to Winston Churchill, the tale of the Jeb Bush campaign might be summarized as "Never before have so few spent so much to achieve so little."

-snip-

Although the vast majority of this money - more than $100 million - went to purchase air time on local television stations, the advertising barrage probably generated several million dollars in consulting fees and commissions

Why did Bush spend so much on ads, especially given how little it seemed to help his ill-fated campaign? One reason may be because the super PAC Right to Rise was run by Mike Murphy, a Republican media consultant who served as a top adviser to Bush's 1998 and 2002 gubernatorial campaigns. Murphy is also a founding partner of the Revolution Agency, the same consulting firm handling media for the campaign. The bulk of spending, almost 90 percent, passed through Oath Strategies. The firm remains something of a mystery, but Oath Strategies shares an address with another consulting firm, Media Ad Ventures, started by Brad Mont, who previously worked with Murphy.

It should come as no surprise that a super PAC run by a media consultant would direct resources toward advertising. However, campaign strategies are also shaped by the commercial incentives of the consulting industry. Advisers such as Murphy channel significant amounts of money to firms they directly own a stake in or those owned by their associates.

I’m not complaining, I love the Bush autopsies and insider looks at his campaign failure, but man, did Jeb poison your dog or something? You’re relentless, LOL.

I like it when a light is shined on these cockroaches like Murphy. He gets a cushy gig on TV bashing anybody but his candidate and behind the scenes get rich as hell conning them. Jeb should have made him sign a contract that he would get much less if he didn’t win. Of course, one has to question the hiring of Murphy after he crashed the past two campaigns.

I laughed hysterically (wasn/t supposed to) every time Jeb/s ad aired.....him saying the US should use overwhelming force to defeat ISIS.

Jeb is incapable of ordering overwhelming force.... he looked like someone forced him to say it.

What campaigns has Murphy won?

That is a comment on Yebbie’s fiscal irresponsibility. He paid $14 million of other-peoples’-money for a consultant to run his miserable, FAIL campaign. He gave about 105 of his funds to this loser, murphy. I guess Yebbie isn’t the best person to allow around OPM (other-peoples’-money). Just think what he could have done as Prez.

It is just a relief to see that he is gone and hopefully the rest of the field will see that spending tens of millions of dollars on negative ads is a waste of money this year.

According to Wikipedia "Michael Ellis "Mike" Murphy (born 1962) is a Republican political consultant.[1] He advised Republicans including John McCain, Rick Lazio, John Engler, Tommy Thompson, Spencer Abraham, Christie Whitman, Lamar Alexander, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.[1][2] Until January 2006, he was an adviser to Mitt Romney.[3] He ran Jeb Bush's political action committee, Right to Rise."

So with Schwarzennegger and Alexander it makes 2? All of them are RINOs though.

So far, presidential candidates have spent $400 million on consulting services, about three times as much as was spent at a similar period in the 2012 campaign.

Wow. Just, wow. Most of it didn't do a damn bit of good. The GOP consultants are a cancer on Republican politics.

Yep, in political campaigns lots and lots of money changes hands and only those in on the deal knows what it buys and where it really goes. It’s like the shell game only there are hundreds if not thousands of shells. But many politicians with piddling incomes somehow windup millionaires.

The political consultant class is the problem

When competent people like Trump run on their own they become a threat to the "Mike Murphy's" of the world. Jeb was a sad but willing victim of the Establishment Consultant system. The consultant class is giving us milquetoast politicians who can't DO anything...

How did this happen?

The consultant class 'interviews' people they're willing 'to allow to hire them'. Yes, that seems strange, but they aren't willing to let just anyone hire them. They're in this for the money and power - and THEY have requirement.

Consultants want 'likable' types who will listen to them and DO what they say. Someone who won't give them a hard time about spending money for useless ads - a "jeb" type. Jeb's the ideal type for a consultant firm... malleable, sweet, listens to the consultant rather than to his own heart and is willing to SPEND A BUNDLE.

The reason our elected people are so lame is BECAUSE the consultant class is choosing them NOT for what they can do for the United States, but for how easy they are to manipulate.

The consultant class ARE the enemy - they're the rulers of the Establishments of both parties. AND they won't go gentle into that good night... They'll destroy Trump if they can... their corrupt jobs depend on the incentives from hell and phony 'leaders' that can't lead... Trump has his work cut out for him...

Nice deconstruction....but I/d guess in 1-2 tweets, Trump will make short shrift of these establishment types.

Good post GOPJ, and I myself am confident Trump will be fine.

"...but for how easy they are to manipulate.

And on the dem. side, this is exactly how the Muslim Valerie Jarrett, Obama's chief advisor - manipulates everything he does.
