[I]s it actually the case that people who proclaim themselves so loudly and so often to be winners actually succeed the most?
My research into business leaders suggests they donât. On the contrary, it suggests that such bombast is one of a slew of behaviors embraced by spectacularly unsuccessful business executives. Unfortunately, many of these habits are part and parcel of the Trump leadership playbook.
For my book "Why Smart Executives Fail," I interviewed some 200 people at 50 companies to learn why some people in business don't merely lose, but lose big. I discovered an interesting pattern: Spectacularly unsuccessful people tend to display a number of behavior patterns in common.
One of the most common is a tendency to see themselves and their companies as dominating their industry, regardless of what is happening around them. For example the co-CEOs of Research in Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, failed to appreciate the rise of the iPhone, going so far as to laugh off Appleâs (AAPL) new product as a nonstarter because it didnât have a ârealâ touch keyboard. As weâve seen with Donald Trump, denigrating your competition is one of the best ways to see this syndrome in action. Like Trump, the RIM CEOs felt certain they would win, and it cost them big time.
...
But hasnât Trump actually been very successful â isn't he a billionaire? Leaving aside the four bankruptcies, mostly due to problems at his Atlantic City casinos, thereâs no question that his net worth today is in the billions. While no one can predict with certainty whether his business empire will remain intact in the years to come, CEOs who embrace unsuccessful habits, as Trump does, are particularly vulnerable to a downturn.

“Almost 9 whole months already.”
More like 16 years. Trump ran for president in 2000.
Dont kill the messenger....its just research.
I could care less if you listen to me or not. You’re not that important.
With millions of $$$ from daddy to start and screwing lots of people out of their hard earned money as well as hanging a ton of small contractors out with bankruptcies and purchasing politicians.
And screaming at other people calling them liars, nasty, and thiefs is not somebody I want for prez.
He is a scumbag that belongs in the business sewers of NYC.
Neither are you.
“With millions of $$$ from daddy to start and screwing lots of people out of their hard earned money as well as hanging a ton of small contractors out with bankruptcies and purchasing politicians.”
Do you actually believe that people think you know what the hell you are talking about?
Of course they do. Truth is important, and the beauty of half-truths is that they're always true.
Doesn’t matter, it is what happened. Besides, most people do not consider hustling real estate to be the pinnacle of business acumen.
Hey, Sidney! What’s in your wallet?
Trump is not the only executive in his corporation.
He is the front man, he SELLS. His brand is TRUMP.
His executives are quite reserved, and I imagine he will surround himself with reserved, smart people to help him once he is elected POTUS.
Trump is the only candidate seriously talking about slashing the federal bureaucracy. Since the LBJ administration the federal bureaucracy has been growing under both Democrat and GOP presidents. Over 100 new federal agencies were created just to support Obamacare. Over the past 30 years the revolution in information technology (PC’s, internet) allowed private industry to dramatically increase productivity while reducing management overhead. Meanwhile the federal bureaucracy has become bloated, increasingly inefficient, and politicized.
The Clinton administration stuffed the professional bureaucracy with political ideologues and Obama has done the same. George W. Bush did not lift a finger to week the political operatives out of the bureaucracy, much less slash the bloat.
Downsizing the government bureaucracy is essential to restoring freedom in this nation. Why aren’t the other candidates talking seriously about a major reduction in federal government headcount? Only a businessman would understand.
How trite. Failures are a part of striving for success.
I am on the weekends when my wife shops, I also stay at a Holiday Inn Express occasionally.
I just read that Trump Label Ties were made in China.
Is that true?
Maybe those are some of the 10 million jobs Trump will be bringing back, LOL.
ending in feb 2000 as a reform party.. big woop
That's 16 years by my count.
“Remember my parameters...”
You want conservatives to agree that your preferences disqualify any facts that would prove Trump and you wrong.
We are not playing that little game.
Trump’s first wive is not permitted to speak to the press or public without his permission. Three marriages is more in line with the premise of the article than someone who is willing to take critique and make himself better with what is true.
Previous employee:
“Later, he would hire and promote many people with questionable qualifications. I could see, over time, his growing need to be coddled and agreed with, the kind of need that leads to being surrounded by yes-sayers. Now, one only has to watch his public appearances to know that Trump is not getting professional advice as to how to conduct himself. He is not being handled by anyone.”
” While wanting to be liked was a vice in me, Trump will tell you that everyone likes him. This is not the case. He can be very charming and ingratiating, but he is not nice. In my experience, he is nasty to the people who work for him. He can be very abusive and curt. He has an incredible temper and he lashes out at everyone, including Ivana.
Of all the people I know who worked for or with Trump, including contractors, lawyers, architects, employees, only a very few actually like him. Some respect him, some don’t. Many hate his guts.”

Trump is an exception to just about every rule.
