“How many individuals can we select from this lower distribution so that we won’t lower the overall capabilities of the final selected group?”

An unprovable, silent, two-tiered system is the answer. Mix them into teams in training. Use them for nothing real. Give them army commendation medals and legions of merit. Put their picture in the paper. Ride the bench. Nobody has a right to be deployed, to go on missions, etc.

Except they use it as a resume builder and in 30 years they are in a position to mess things up.

Great idea - except for the fact that the numbers of nearly useless female members count against your end strength, which means that your unit will either try to do the mission with them or function with lower numbers.

The females will almost certainly object to being put in rear area positions, so expect complaints up (and bypassing) the chain of command and Equal Opportunity complaints, etc.,etc.

The next piece of fun will be as the unit members become sexually (I mean romantically) involved. Unit dynamics, assignments and favoritism - plus jealousy from those left out - will trash unit effectiveness.

Bottom line: our choice is the combat worth of our defense entities or making every aggrieved group feel better about themselves.

Equality is not the same as equivalence.
