Today we celebrate President's Day, a day in which Americans are expected to look back and honor our founding fathers and their contributions to our Nation's proud history.

The words and writings of our founding fathers offer us wisdom and insight that stretches across the ages. The ideas about freedom and liberty that they wrote about and fought for are still serving America today. The system of government that they envisioned and set up for us continues to persevere, has brought great prosperity to the people residing in the United States. Through the centuries, millions of brave troops have risked their lives, fought and died to defend the ideas and principles that our founding fathers gave to us.

This President's Day we would serve ourselves well to think about what kind of wisdom our founding fathers might have to help us through these troubling times.

President Obama talks a big game about how he's keeping America safe at the same time he's trying to close Guantanamo Bay and practically ignoring ISIS, a dangerous group of Islamic radicals killing innocent people and occupying large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria. Yet even after the horrific attacks by two terrorists who killed 12 Americans in San Bernardino, CA last year, Obama still refuses to refer to our enemies as Islamic terrorists. He ignores the fact that Islam plays any part in our enemies' actions or their motivations, insisting that they are but common criminals, not terrorists motivated by a perverse interpretation of their religion. How can we hope to succeed if our Commander-In-Chief doesn't even admit who it is we are fighting?

How would our founding fathers have viewed President Obama's refusal to face facts? It may surprise some readers who think of Islamic terrorism as a modern, post-Cold War phenomena, but in fact our founding fathers also had to deal with Islamic aggression even in the earliest days of our Republic.

The United States fought two wars against the Barbary Pirates and the Islamic states (provinces of the Ottoman Empire) who supported them.

The first and second Barbary wars took place immediately before and after the famous War of 1812. The first Barbary War (1801-1805) and Second Barbary War (1812-1815) are overshadowed by the larger conflict with England, but these small wars helped give rise to American naval power and showcased the new American Navy taking the fight to the enemy in North Africa, blockading the ports in Tripoli and forcing our enemies to heel.

Could these early conflicts be considered America's first war against Islamic extremists? The Barbary pirates rationalized their terror raids the same way ISIS does today, as John Adams and Thomas Jefferson observed. While on a diplomatic mission to London, they negotiated with the Ambassador from Tripoli and shared the following wisdom after the meeting.

"It was written in their Koran, that all nations that had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every [Muslim] who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise."

Clearly, our founding fathers knew that there is no negotiating with Islamic terrorists.

George Washington was also noted as one of the main proponents of war against the Barbary pirates as well as the Islamic states who supported them. But our founding fathers were not intolerant of Islam. Thomas Jefferson is said to have owned a personal copy of the Koran. Washington himself and Benjamin Franklin spoke highly of those Muslims who peacefully practiced their faith and respected their piety, but they were not afraid to go to war and fight those who waged war in the name of Islam. And they were not shy to call them Muslims as our current President does.

President Obama should take a cue from the wisdom of our founding fathers in the past. Calling our enemies what they are - Islamic extremists, does not make you a Muslim-Hater or an Islamophobe, it simply shows an understanding of who our enemy is and what they claim to represent. Of course the terrorists are wrong, of course we know not all Muslims want to kill Christians and Jews, but appeasing the extremists by trying to talk as nicely as possible about their professed faith doesn't help, it only confuses and hurts our ability to defend ourselves and our allies from their attacks.

Although he was not a founder, he was the son of one of the founders and worked alongside his father from an early age, so his words fit here.

Islam has had about 10 years of peace out of 1300. Congress was so concerned about the Muslim Barbary Pirates that they commissioned the construction of the USS Constitution was the most powerful warship of the time. Cannon Balls bounced off of the New England Oak sides of the ship.

The phrase “To The Shores Of Tripoli” in the Marine Corps Hymn refer to the conflict of 1895 when Marine Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon and his Marines
marched across 600 miles of North African desert to rid the “shores of Tripoli” of muslim pirates and rescue the kidnapped crew of the USS Philadelphia.

This historic engagement was the first Marine Corps’ battle on foreign soil.

And the US Marines have been kicking muslim butts ever since.

In recognition and in appreciation of Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon’s victory in this historic battle the Mameluke

chieftain in North Africa awarded Lt. O’Bannon The Mameluke Sword, now known as the Marine sword.

All Marine Officers now carry The Marine Sword which is the oldest weapon still in service to the U.S. armed forces.

Every muslim on the planet is an extremist. ALL OF THEM.

No matter how nice, or how violent, they ALL support the imposition of sharia over ALL governments. Any who tell you otherwise are engaging in Taqiyya or are apostate.

From 1798 until 1872 Marines wore a uniform that contained a neck piece made of leather. This stiff leather collar, called “The Stock”, was about 3 1/2 inches high and served two purposes.

1) It served as protection to the neck and critical veins during battle (though in most battle situations this uniform accessory was not practical for wear because it prevented free movement of the neck).

2)It held a Marine’s neck erect while on parade, giving him a great military bearing by forcing the wearer to hold his chin high. Major General George F. Elliot, a Marine of the Spanish American War era, is quoted as saying the wearers looked “like geese looking for rain”.

Most likely origin of the term Leathernecks stems from the Marines participation in the Barbary Wars. When boarding the ships of hostile pirates, Marines were given added protection against cutlass slashes from the heavy collar. These actions also coincide with when the leather collar started to be worn “to the shores of Tripoli!”

Is 1895 a typo? Shouldn’t it be 1805? O’Bannon died in 1850.

Of course, there was no Republican Party so he might have been a Democrat, and dead Democrats are capable of amazing things. ;)

Thanks for that post - I’d lost familiarity with the Barbary Wars and felt long overdue for a refresher, so I invested most of last night reacquainting myself with it.

What it reinforced is the perpetual enmity of Islam:
1) Its first four centuries, attacking Europe from the west, reaching it climax with defeat near Paris at the hands of Charles Martel in 732;
2) After that, attacking Europe from the east, reaching its climax in 1683 when the Ottomans were defeated at the gates of Vienna by the King of Poland, John III Sobieski;
3) Followed by three centuries (17th/18th/19th) of attacks on Europe from the south, with over 1,000,000 (!) Europeans taken into slavery by the terror states of modern-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Turkey; and finally
4) The 20th and 21th centuries, attacking the entire planet with infiltration (aka immigration) and terrorism .

This is Islam. It is a religion of continual, perpetual enmity. It is NOT a religion of peace - that’s establishment nonsense.

And today, February 16, 2016 marks the 212th anniversary of February 16, 1804 - the scuttling of the USS Philadelphia in Tripoli harbor, an exploit that no less than British naval hero Horatio Nelson called the “most daring act of the age.”
