He never complained about it; but he has always been one to
keep a stiff upper lip. He was with TUSLOGDet. whatever
that means. Came out a Staff Sergeant. Still don’t know
what he did over there.

The United States Logistics Group Detachment (TUSLOGDet) is what it stands for.
The move a lot of equipment and personnel, which means he controlled a lot of very large aircraft. Since you said "he was the border of Turkey/Russia in SAC", and I can only guess whether he worked in the radar unit or in the tower, I'd guess he did normal air traffic control duties.
