Risking rift with US, Turkey confronts Syrian Kurds

ISTANBUL (AFP) - After months of tensions, Turkey is taking on Syrian Kurdish fighters inside Syria in a move that risks inflaming tensions with its NATO ally the United States and complicating the search for peace after almost five years of civil war.

On consecutive days this weekend, Turkish forces struck positions of Syrian Kurds with fire from Firtina howitzers deployed on the border, saying the army responded to incoming attacks.

This was the first time Turkey had confirmed striking positions of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its People's Protection Units (YPG) militia inside Syria, although last year the Kurds accused Turkey on at least one occasion.

Turkey accuses the PYD and YPG of being the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has fought an over 30-year insurgency against the Turkish state in search of greater powers and rights for the country's Kurdish minority.

Ankara fears the groups are seeking to create a Kurdish autonomous region on Turkey's doorstep in Syria and is now lumping the PYD and YPG together with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, who Ankara wants ousted, and its Russian allies.

But while the United States regards the PKK as a terror group it does not extend the classification to the PYD and YPG, who have become important allies for Washington as virtually the sole forces able to successfully fight Islamic State (IS) jihadists on the ground in Syria.

Turkey determined to eliminate the Kurds in Syria...who happen to be allies of the US, Syria and Russia.

And, they are giving the US ultimatums..."with us or with the "terrorists".

I believe they will cross the border with ground forces.

Erdogan: "You don't have a problem with me attacking your Kurdish allies, do you son?"

Obama: "No, Daddy."

"Turkey is going to get their @sses handed to them..."

The Russian Air Force would make short work of the 240 F-16's in Turkish Inventory. Russia has put more modern aircraft in the air than that since 2010.

And their strike capability rivals ours. Expect them to be granted bases in Iran.

If Turkish armor crosses into Syria, it will be exciting to watch.

But it won't last long.

Nothing on earth will make ‘short work’ of 240 f16s.
An adversary with hundreds of modern aircraft, AWACS and logistical support along with advanced area denial sams and ground support could make things interesting but even the Russians are not that well equipped there at this time.

Rather than discussing tactics I’d rather someone from NATO reaffirm that if turkey attacks anyone NATO (US) in not going to come to there aid, ever. If they have a problem with that tell them to expect same cooperation they gave us in Iraq and add GFY.

"but even the Russians are not that well equipped there at this time."

The Russians could set up that shop in Iran in 5 days, with heavy freighter logistics across the Caspian meeting them there.

They could fly another 10 S-400 batteries into Latakia from Iran, using existing overflight permissions.

All the while keeping another 20 squadrons at the ready from across the Black Sea, forcing Turkey to, at least, split their air assets in half.

Turkey's air force would be shot down and/or grounded in a few days, at most. And their armor in Syria nothing but targets.

Most countries now have no problem being in a “rift” with the current US administration. They know they cannot rely on the USA for anything now so they do what ever the heck they want and I do not blame them. President Ovomit is just not there.
