While partisan battles rage in Washington and state capitals, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker thrives in one of the nation's bluest states.

He trades compliments, not jabs, with Democratic legislative leaders and has forged close relationships with other key Democrats, including Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. Democrats, in fact, occupy several key posts in his cabinet and inner circle. [...]

For the most part, Baker has sought compromise over confrontation since narrowly defeating Democrat Martha Coakley in the 2014 gubernatorial election. Four years earlier, in a losing campaign against then-Gov. Deval Patrick, a Democrat, Baker came off as angry and partisan, even he acknowledges. [...]

"A lot of Republicans look at government as the enemy," said Will Keyser, a top strategist in Baker's 2014 campaign. "Gov. Baker looks at government as a really important function, a limited function in very special areas, but a very important function." ...

The GOP establishment’s model Republican:

Someone who helps Democrats get things done.

Now you know why they call it the Uniparty.

Well, if you want ANY influence in Lib Central ... I can’t blame him. Otherwise, the GOP has NO influence (like here in CA).

I don’t advocate that for most situations, but I do in some. Otherwise, we die off (I reference CA again)

And I have gone on record more than once that I loathe the appeasing GOPe.

How is it “influence” when he’s doing what the liberals want of him?

Yup. That’s why he’s a RINO.

Someone named Arnold Schwarzenegger also surrounded himself with Democrats.

Last I heard, he endorsed a candidate named John Kasich.

That doesn’t exclude “just as bad”. Even so, someone can always be worse.

The philosophy on a guy like Baker is that he does not move the ball forward on any meaningful conservative issues....he just keeps things from getting worse & in many cases much worse so the state does not tip over the edge.

I am merely stating that Baker is one step above Deval, I am not defending him in any way.

I didn’t presume you were defending him.

“I am merely stating that Baker is one step above Deval, I am not defending him in any way.”

a frog in warm cattle will still be cooked in due time. A republican in texachusetts is a yellow dog democrat anywhere else in the country.

another good example of a republican is the former republican mayor of New York City - the small cup Bloomberg.

Tell me again there are republicans north of the Mason-Dixon line

"Charlie Baker thrives in one of the nation's bluest states"

Massachusetts is a RED state. Red is Communist, not blue.

Heh. Bloomberg was a Democrat for years and years, then suddenly switched parties in 2001 when running for NYC mayor after Giuliani.

In NY, you don’t have to switch parties, you just file on party lines. For example, Charles Rangel has run many times on the Republican line (in addition to the Dem line), even though he’d never serve as one. Bloomberg ran on the Republican line because he didn’t want to navigate the ethnic cesspool by running on the Democrat line and could use his fortune to buy the line out from under legitimate party-switcher, Herman Badillo, who was running as a Giuliani Republican in 2001.
