Turkey Shells Aleppo, Says "Massive Escalation" In Syria Imminent As Saudis Ready Airstrikes
Zerohedge ^ | 02/13/2016 | Tyler Durdin

As you can see, Turkey has begun shelling Aleppo in what is indeed a very serious escalation that will likely prompt a Russian response.

"Shelling was reported at Menagh air base, a former Syrian Air Force facility that Kurds seized from Islamist rebels just days ago, and at three other positions between the airport and Turkish border," The Independent reports. "The air base has been a key target for several parties in the Syrian civil war since 2012, being besieged by rebels for almost a year until it was seized by a coalition including an early form of Isis and the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra in August 2013 [and] it remained in rebel hands until Thursday, when Kurdish PYD fighters capitalised on the diversion caused by Bashar al-Assad’s forces and Russian air strikes attacking rebel areas to the south to seize Menagh."

"A Kurdish official confirmed the shelling of Menagh air base in the northern Aleppo countryside, which he said had been captured by the Kurdish-allied Jaysh al-Thuwwar group rather than the Kurdish YPG militia," Reuters says, adding that "Both are part of the Syria Democratic Forces alliance." That group, you're reminded, was the subject of intense scrutiny late last year as we documented in our classic piece "Full Metal Retard: US Launches "Performance-Based" Ammo Paradrop Program For Make-Believe 'Syrian Arabs.'" It's the same group the US has been paradropping weapons to.

To sum up, Turkey is deliberately attempting to reverse gains made by the US-backed Kurds in an area that is under siege by the Russians and Iran. Or, more simply: utter chaos.

Yes, and martial law. How soon will the hardening of the White House be complete?

Which will have to go through Jordan, potentially destabilizing that country too.

Feels like the summer of 1914.

Let’s see if Turkey’s jet jockeys want to engage with Russian pilots.

Seems to me, the Russians have a score to settle.

Agree on Egypt. Pakistan is beholding to SA materially in development of Pakistan's nukes, according to some reports I've read. I'm sure parties involved are subject to change sides as things worsen. I expect Israel to end up in the middle of it all, and eventually on the receiving end of the many forces gathering around it.

Russians don’t have air superiority.
They have a couple dozen aircraft, at best, in the area. The Turks outnumber them 10:1 in aircraft in range. The Turks can also attack the Soviet airbases in Syria with artillery rockets in range, and from the sea. It’s also not clear who has the technological advantage.
This sort of escalation is very dangerous.

The reports are true, but (1) are the Paks going to be grateful to the point of getting into the BIG MESS and (2) Paks have a lot of deals with Russians now, including buying military hardware. .. so -- we do not know which way they will swing.

And Israel is also an uncertain factor... hopefully they are smart enough to stay out.

That and Islam as a whole wants to kill off all non Muslims, then, they will kill each other off.
1st, we need to let them kill each other off first.
2nd, then we need to kill whatever is left of them.

Get to the Kurds, supply them with all the nastiest types of weapons we dare let them have. They will take care of a large part of the problem. Drive a wedge right down the middle between them. Keep the spoils for ourselves.

Russians don’t have air superiority.

S-400 and other air-defense systems would make Turkish airplanes over Syria very risky.

https://www.rt.com/news/331366-air-defense-syria-russian-planes/

As for the number of Russian aircraft in Syria, 50+ for sure, one can probably find current numbers easily. My guess that they will be unopposed over Syria.

General Patton used the term “Worthless as a pi$$ed soaked paper bag” for people like Kerry. And for POS Obama and many other contemporaries.

True, this is a worldwide crisis. However, Russia is not in any danger of collapse within foreseeable future, whereas both Turkey and Saudis are, and quite possibly the US as well.

Good question and probably one the Paks are asking themselves. I would think Pakistan will supply SA with nukes - if SA asks for them, if not the crews, or at least onsite advisers.

Amazing that Wiki article doesn’t mention the harvest of the steppe.
That’s extreme censorship.
