Not sure why anyone would be surprised he is an authoritarian.
Think of the support he could have garnered it he were to step in and SOLVE the situation.
WOW!! He CAN and is a GREAT negotiator. Able to get the BEST, GREATEST, ONE THAT WILL KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF deal!!
